mandyque Report post Posted July 14, 2005 I'm glad that he acknowledges the need for special schools to continue to exist, his mainstreaming plan was a cause for concern for me. I know some special needs children can go to mainstream and cope well with it, other schools have specialist units which are great for those who can cope with it, but in reality there is always going to be a need for special schools too. In my dd's case it would be completely impossible for her to go to a mainstream school, she would never cope with the hustle and bustle and they wouldn't be able to cope with her. She would get over excited and over anxious in a typical schools playground or dinner hall or classroom, and would cause no end of chaos. There are 1001 reasons why she could never cope and just as many to support her staying in special school.
Minxygal Report post Posted July 14, 2005 I have a child in each...One in Special school, one in mainstream. I believe both are appropriately placed, however what really really bugs me is that all too many people think we have a choice in the matter. By making statements harder to get hold of and by closing more and more special schools we have that choice taken away. I was speaking to a TA the other day who is doing a college course in SN who was told recently in a lecture that we parents have a choice where to place our children. Of course I put her straight but she was quite shocked as she had been led to believe that we had much more control over our childrens choices. She had no idea that the withholding of statements actually often left us with little or no choice.
