Legal advice re: diagnosis

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am 34 and after recent life problems and lots of self analysis believe I could suffer from AS. However I have functioned well in most areas of my life - except relationships :-( I also believe that my friends, family and work colleagues are all aware of this and that I am the last to know !! I have tried talking to friends and family about this recently but they deny it, saying I should not self diagnose. I have self diagnosed myself with several other illnesses in the past (body dysmorphic disorder and narcissistic personality disorder) but in all 3 cases felt I have been 'guided' to these conclusions!

I have always thought my life was somewhat bizarre ... but also somewhat blessed, as though someone was looking out for me. I have a Consultation on Tuesday but want to know if there are any circumstances in which they could with hold information from me eg. if they thought I was at risk of self harm or had a better prognosis by returning to my previous functioning level.

Thanks,

CT

Hi CT .....after my sons dx I realised the huge similarities between us..I have OCD type tendencies, had big problems with food as a child, hate stairs with holes in, can,t forgive  ...the list goes on...after seeing a therapist I concluded myself that I,m somewhat quirky  ......I haven,t sort a DX I just needed to understand myself better. I can,t offer any advice regarding your consultation but try to access a therapist that specialises in ASD/AS if that is what you believe you have.I don,t believe a therapist can with hold info as you can access your records.Hopefully someone on the forum more knowledgeable will help.Good luck  ....Oh and welcome to the forum :) .

Medical staff can withold information if they belive it will be detrimental for you to know it, but I can't see how this would apply in your case.

I have decided not to bother with a formal diagnosis as I cannot see what benefit it would have for me, although I can appreciate for some that a confirmation of what you suspect would be reassuring.

If having a diagnosis would help you understand yourself better and also explain your behaviour to others, I can only see this as a positive step for you, and therefore there would be no reason for anyone to think they should withold this information.
