Where as I do believe some Autistics/Aspies are allowed to get away with some things which they are perfectly capable of restraining and Autism in no way 'makes' them do it, I think Tantum has used such a poor choice of words; he's not specific enough, he doesn't give an example of a wrong done and then indulged. It reminds me of Moneer on Only Human when the headmistress was angry at him for kicking the lunchbox when she had only told him to not hit others, she was giving him no benefit of the doubt and it seemed detrimental to his development more than anything. Tantum has not acknowledged that an Aspie may percieve in a completely different manner. It doesn't cross his mind for one minute that his suggestion put in practice(as it was with Moneer and myself as a child) only feeds the common hatred of NTs that AS teenagers and adults in particular have. Like I said in the other thread on lying, an Autistic will often have to manage the truth for survival, though they hate lying; the way a responsible adult will punish an Autistic but not deal with the cause is disgusting. Tantum agrees that bullying must be put to an end but he doesn't exactly define what bullying is. He even contradicts himself with his insistence that indulging an Aspie shouldn't be done; how many excuses for bullying does that provide? Any disabled person can be bullied by simply not indulging them; they need to be indulged to be given equal oppotunity. If we didn't indulge wheelchair users, they wouldn't get ramps and would be confined to their homes. There have been many cases where I have been bullied and seeking help from an adult has been met with a "What makes you so special?" in those complicated circumstances. I am not sure what happened to Dr. Tantam, I recently read one of his earlier papers (before he seemed to specialise in criminal and violent cases) and was surprised how insightful it was. Perhaps he went down the same road as Hans Asperger, who become so fascinated by "deviant" behaviour that he focussed almost entirely on children with AS who also exhibited behavior that could be interpreted as "malicious" (although in many cases it wasn't).
