Hi

My ds was diagnosed 2 yrs ago when he was 2 and a half. We went for one long appt with a team made up of paediatrician, Speech and Language therapist and a clinical psychologist. They observed him and talked to me in detail. They then called me in and said that they were all of the opinion that he was autistic and this would be confirmed one month later in another appointment with another Paediatrician who is the local autism specialist. They didn't say exactly where he would be on the spectrum (although I was desperate to know this!) but siad at best moderate/severe and 2 yrs on they were right. This describes him well. He also has Severe Learning Difficulties. I really feel for you. Even 2 yrs on the whole experience was like a nightmare. It does get easier with time but it's a long learning process and you need to be very patient with yourself and to get as much support as you can. If you've been left feeling unsure of things then I would phone and say that it was very difficult to take it all in and ask exactly what will happen next, and when. Also ask how they are going to support your child (e.G educationally) and for information of all the services available to you.

Take care of yourself, Elun xx
