  4. Ok we accept the statement kids can be a challenge and do require more effort on the schools part. However what else does it mean to the school? Does a statement mean that the school is obliged to provide the extra resources. Is that obligation paid for out of existing budgets, or does a statement mean that the LEA is obliged to provide the school with extra funding. Another question comes to mind does a statement mean that the LEA has to fun training etc? I ask these questions because we repeatedly see this on this site from the parent?s perspective. Does anyone know how this works from the Head Teachers perspective? To quote Carols signature 'The Key to Understanding is Awareness' Is there any way we in the schools interest ho have /get statements? Julian
  5. Second hand laptops are quite a good route to go, and probably the one I would take, but please be aware that they can suffer the same sort of battery problems as mobile phones. Replacements can be very hard to find, and are often costly to buy when you can find them
  6. Ian pleas tell us more. What is/are optimeyes is ther a web page on this, I wounder if it might work for my son. Julian
  7. I just took some time to look at the alpha smart website to see what exactly these things do. It very much depends on which model you get. Some models are very capable, and other limited to just store text for formatting on a pc later. I can understand the teachers reservations if the offering is one of the limited models. best of luck Julian
  8. I think you need try and find out the specifics from the school principle and teacher as to why the Alphasmart is insufficient. As an IT person I can think of a lot of very good reasons not to have a lap top ( apart from being nearly twice the price for what you get, our company experiences a 30% failure rate and a 10% theft rate in the 3 year expect life span and that is with adult users) , so it would not surprise me that if the alpha smart is supposed the meet curriculum needs there would have such a policy. Once you have the specifics you will be able to argue the case better. It may help to get the head to argue for you. J
  9. If you can comit and have the energy / time, go for it. Beleieve it or not it will make you less of a "pain" because they will see you diferently and becasue you will lear what make them tick one reason head often make recomendations go for gold J

  11. Alow me to be a bit autistic hear Our brains are the only organ that is not fully developed at birth, in fact it finished developing around the age of 12 so after birth there is a great deel of wrong wiring to be done, one of the reason th medicines are some what controversial. I probably got that all worng and some one can corect me. J

  19. My wife came up with the idea of a first time book. The idea is , a bit like a diary, they get to write the date and what is was the did for the first time, sort of collecting victories. the typical sorts of things are the first time i tried, carrots, first time I tries pancakes, the first time I washed my hair my self , the first I wiped..... what ever Works real well however tonight DS said "I need to put something in my first time book" "Great , what did you do ?" "Nothing I just forgot the write the first time I wrote in my first time book!" J
  20. Sadly this is very common in adult AS people The reason i posted this topic is becausemy wife says that if you took all the AS traits and delt them like a pack of cards my boys ould have compleatly the opersit hand, however the older on and I would have the same hand! The thing is the older one and i connect with out thinking, the the younger and I are in diferent worlds and its realy hard work my me to do everything consoncesly Julian
  21. I should also add the many of the HF / AS kids ar going to have an IQ higher than that of the practioner! The will figure out what is being done / has been done sooner or later and will resent more that hell. Have you ever seen an AS kid that knows he is smarter tha the teacher, I have and it not a pretty sight. J
  22. Professionals are anti-stim because they, the profesional not the child, get destracted by it. Inface it's part of the kinesthetic learning style, which most profesional teachers now know should be encuraged if that is the learning style of the child. The danger with all of these kinds of thing is not theory or the practice but the practioner. I shudder to think of the long term self esteem effects. It?s tough enough for NT teenager, let alone an AS one who thinks he has been brain washed. So far every thing I have come across regarding ABA is about making the child conform to standards set by parents, teacher , profesionals. Primine please remeber these are childeren not lab rats J
