  1. She seems a bit 'off' to me - best avoid under all circumstances.

My brother ended up in a very similar situation and was branded a wife beater and abuser (which he really really was not) by local social services as she was very good at manipulating the situation.

This girl sounds the exact same - cut her out of your life and focus on the good stuff.

  2. I've trained many people on the spectrum, and think that there is definite scope to adapt the curriculum for specific learning styles. However these things, according to the government cost far too much to institute.

Personally I think that schools should be finding out about a pupils individual learning style and learning how to integrate that with the mainstream so that there is the best of both worlds.

  3. Get him off grindr!! It's a bit full on for an inexperienced 14 year old! Grindr is more for finding people for 'adult meetups'. He could come on here, or sign up to other ASD related forums - there are a lot of LGBT teens about online so he needn't worry about getting exploited etc

He could also look up local LGBT organisations as there are a lot that help teenagers :)

  4. I think right now you need to talk to someone like Mind or Breathing Space who will allow you to vent and help you get constructive help.

Take care of yourself and allow yourself to de-stress from the interview experience slowly. It sounded like an awful phonecall and I am not surprised you are feeling to stressed out. Give yourself time to process it.

  5. @Aeolienne - I was one of the people made redundant, it had a massive impact on a lot of people when it closed as well as me - so I would ask that you act with a bit more forethought.

They have since re-opened as a smaller company in Glasgow, and I have been hired back under a self employed basis for 7 months now, and they have a head office in London which is on it's way to recruiting its first trainee class.

They only pay travelling expenses during the training phase, and you are still able to claim benefits. You get training for free which includes web development, programming, software testing, also coaching on work interaction soft skills, and a formal qualification which if you were to sit of your own volition would cost you upwards of £100.

  6. Hi Thomas,

First off, welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a hard time so far, hopefully things will get better from now on for you!

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be of some use to you in regards to your anxiety - I've attended CBT a few times and it's helped me so much. In my case it helped identify what made me angry or anxious and made me a lot better prepared to handle it when I did get angry or have panic attacks. It actually also helped me realise I needed structure as the first therapist I saw liked to talk in a stream of conciousness way - the second one had made up worksheets and diaries for me to write in so it felt like I was actually doing something :)

You just go to your doctor, and ask to be referred for it - I wrote down why I felt I needed it beforehand as I get flustered when I go to the doctor.

As for eye contact, I tend to look at peoples eyebrows, or the tip of their nose - so it looks like I am looking at them, without actually looking at them!

What kind of work do you do? It could be that you may be able to find alternative ways of communicating or at least ways of handling it through the CBT.

Can I ask what area you are in as well? There may be an Autism Resource Centre you can go to?

  7. Here's a great bit of info from Govan Law Centre in Glasgow - it primarily applies to Scotland, however the guidance and pro forma can just as easily be applied in England and Wales as housing benefit is a UK wide benefit and can also apply as the arguments are just as valid anywhere in the UK.

    Hope this helps.
