  1. Hi. I don't use receptive music therapy (=listening to music) in my work. My work involves making music in order to achieve certain targets (communication, social skills, frustration management etc.) which are drawn up after a 4-session assessment. I only use live music in my work - music that I create together with my client. Hope this helps.
  2. Hi Wasfield. Does your daughter's dx say where she is on the spectrum? If possible, I would first look at a VI school, because some things commonly viewed as part of autism can sometimes be secondary. (For example you will see a lot of children with PMLD engage in classic "autistic" stimming for lack of means to communicate and/or amuse themselves). As your daughter has VI, there may be a whole lot of communication and social issues around that. If some of her ASD traits are secondary, they will lessen/disappear when she gets appropriate VI help. If not, you can still try and move her to an ASD school, but I would definitely try a VI school first.
  3. Hi kwjd, how did the meeting go? In my opinion children with ASD thrive better in specialist schools (unless they have HFA). Also I worked in special schools as a teacher in Ncl for years - PM me if you want, I am happy to help if I can.
  4. Hi All, I'm a Special Music therapist in the North East and I mostly work with children who have ASD. I'm also a registered SEN teacher and worked in state special schools before deciding to devote myself solely to music therapy. I have joined to learn and listen to others - and also to give support if I can.
