It is sensory. If you give him a stack of papers or a phone book to rip up, then you are reinforcing it rather than reducing it. Try replacing it or maybe do art projects with your child that involves ripping paper and gluing it which is more positive.

Yes it is sensory. Find a replacement. Reinforcing this behavior by giving him other things to rip up is not a good idea as it could become worse. Replace it with something more positive.
