elainem Report post Posted September 17, 2006 Hi, I have found a VW camper I want to buy but the back seat has only lap belts. My kids are 6 years old. I want to find out if there is a car seat on the market that has it's own integral 5 point harness (suitable for kids 6 to 11), and which can be installed in the vehicle using the lap belt. ANy help appreciated. Thanks Elaine
shell Report post Posted September 17, 2006 i don't know of any but was reading up on the car seat thing and if your car is old and only has lap belts you don't need a car seat am now more confused about it than before sorry that was probably no help to you

mrs phasmid Report post Posted September 17, 2006 we had one of these for middle lap belt in car when phas jr was little and twins came along ebay link this was the safest thing around for lap belts and only thing recommended for older cars. normal booster cushions will slip and no car seat is manufactured [to my knowledge] for lap belts. also gives a little table like platform for colouring etc mrs p
Kazzen161 Report post Posted September 17, 2006 InCarSafety in Milton Keynes were very helpful when I was trying to find three seats to fit in the back of my Escort. They sell a big range of seats to suit all sorts (even had one for Twins). I got a fixing kit (that replaced the lap belt) for a 1-4 year olds seat, so it could go in the middle. I later got a 5 point harness to replace my lap belt, but you need to have somewhere to fix the top fixings. They will advise you over the phone if you tell them what type of vehicle you have. Karen A Report post Posted September 17, 2006 It is worth getting a car seat that you can use with a lap belt even if it is not a legal requirement. One of the panel on dragons den was talking about lap belts the other day-there have been reports of children suffering paralysis after accidents.I know I used one in our family car for years in my chidhood but that is what they said.Karen. mrs phasmid Report post Posted September 17, 2006 this is very true karenA, this was one of the factors 13 yrs ago that we took ages tracking down the seat i posted above. lap belts used on their own, especially with young children, can cause broken pelvis', spines necks etc due to the facts that 1 these, more than any other belt in a car are adult orientated 2 they are prone to 'riding up' on children and sitting around the waist and not across the lap 3 unlike 3point belts there is no support for the upper body in the event of a crash
katkin Report post Posted September 17, 2006 Krelling harnesses can be fitted instead, the firm are helpful and give good advice. Also good for Houdini chidren. If you go for a Krelling, as they are made for disabled children, you may get help from SS through OT with the cost. Love Kat
elainem Report post Posted September 19, 2006 thank you for all advice. we have decided as there are no suitable seatbelts we can't buy . will look for one with 3 point belts. Elaine
lil_me Report post Posted September 21, 2006 Only thing different that might fit a child that size is a 5 point racing harness, which are used in rally cars etc. Which could be used with a booster under it. Also you can buy 3 point seatbelts to replace the lapbelts which a friend of mine has just done in his classic car for safety reasons. Usually cheap from kit car specialists etc.
