Ear defenders?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

my 12 yr old dd with A/s is hypersensitive to noise and everyday gets very over whelmed coming in from noisy school to a noisy house (4 children).

We have tried telling her to sit in her room for peace and quiet, but do understand, that there is no where in the house that is quiet.

My young son has a pop up tent to play in and she recently asked for one to sit in. I was also thinking of ear defenders or some such like to cut out noise, a couple of questions?

Does anyone use any sort of noise reduction techniques or devices such as ear defenders?

Are their any ear defender out there which eradicate noise but are not hugely bulky such as those worn by road workers? Any particulalry for kids with A/S?

Anyone have any other ideas or share the same problems? My daughter has tried her walkman, even soothing classical music as well as a range of other noises, but it seems she just needs some silence in her life. She is becoming more and more anxious as time goes by and we worry about her so much.

Hi Annae,

I'm an AS adult and I have very severe auditory sensitivity (for instance, I cannot cope with the fan on my laptop, even when I'm in a room on my own).

There have been other threads on this forum from parents about ear defenders so it would be worth doing a search for them and I sure some parents on here can help you. They would probably be fine for the house, but your daughter's at about the age where she will be feeling quite self-conscious and probably needs something to use elsewhere.

I use earplugs - you can get these from the chemist, but I don't find these block out enough sound, so I'm getting some specialist ones as part of my DSA - if I can find the website, I'll post a link later. Additionally, I currently use noise-reducing ear-phones, but although these reduce noise quite a bit, they're not fantastic and as you say, require music, when sometimes, particularly when I'm studying, I want silence. The solution that has been suggested for me is noise-cancelling earphones - these have some thingy in them that cancels noise and so can be used with or without music/sound. These are again being provided as part of my DSA, so when I get them, I'll let you know how effective they are.

Mumble. :)

We use them with my five year old and they have made such a difference. He is able to enjoy things that he previously found distressing because of the noise and they are his security. I think he also likes the deep pressure they apply to his head. I got mine from Ebay - search Peltor kids though have seen them in his catalogue http://www.ldalearning.com/ for 7.99 only

THE Pelter kids ones look fab in pink but it says up to age 7, my daughter is nearly 13 so will thesee be too small? She has a fairly small head but doubt they would fit unless very generously sized. Anyone know of anyother brightly coloured ones for older kids?

Boots do bright yellow ones and superdrug do orange ones. They're both the foam type of ear plug - so will mold to fit any ear shape. I use them myself at night, as the slightest noise wakes me up. My son has also used them in the past to help block out noise when he's stressed. They are extremely comfortable and block out a surprising amount of noise. They are also washable and cheap.

Hmm,

my daughter won't have ear plugs as she feels they will get stuck ( I know they won't) so I was hoping to find some brightly coloured ear defenders (over ear type) Some postt I read mentioned placing a wire from the defenders to make them look like music head phones... I thought that was a good idea.

J uses distraction and focuses on his PSP, also his gameboy, and I am getting a ds so no daught he will nick that as well, something to take away the triggers, also they can have earphones if they want, mp3 are good.

travel stores do a variety of ear plugs, ones that have a pull thing so you can easily take them out, I have them for bed because I cant cope with the fish tank filter buzzing.

These are made by Design Go and come with different filters for different noise zones. very good very comfortable and easy to pull out, soft on the ear and comes in a little zip pouch.

got mine from whsmiths on the travel stand that sells traveling items.

What about GUN Shops, they have a variety of ear defenders and DIY or hire shops that hire out building equiptment like road drills and diggers ect,....

Their is a silicone mould that can be made to cover the inner ear that is structured to your ear shape, they are good but expensive but would be comfortable and block out a lot of noise.

I can try and find out more if your interested a local hearing aids buisness may have more information.

My 11yr old son wears ear defenders; we were lucky as my hubby had some supplied while in the RAF which are perfect(designed to keep out noise of jet engines!!). He is very sensitive to noise, light, textures etc. Being a boy and an aspie means he is not to bothered what people think. Not sure how your daughter would react to strange looks when wearing ear defenders, but they certainly do the trick. :notworthy: You could always cover a pair with her choice of material if you can only get hold of 'boring' ones. The other option is wearing a baseball cap with them to make them less visable. When it comes down to it it is a case of what your daughter finds worse; the noise or the stares.

Good luck

Keep smilin

Elly
