Bevvy Report post Posted June 12, 2007 Hi I have read a lot of threads on here mentioning Social Stories. Can you please tell me what they are and what they are used for? Oh and if you make them up yourself or you buy them? Sorry I have no idea. Thanks
KarenT Report post Posted June 12, 2007 It's a visual tool to help a child with ASD to understand a situation so that they can cope with it. Check out Carol Gray's website, who devised them: http://www.thegraycenter.org/socialstorywriting.cfm or you could have a look at her book about writing them: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Social-Stories-Boo...3561&sr=1-1 They can be quite complicated to write as there's a ratio of different types of sentences to use (instructive, descriptive, perspective etc) - they're not as simple to write as they look at first. They should be tailored specifically to the individual childs needs and abilities, and it can help to incorporate photographs and graphics to make them more personal and easier for them to relate to. It's good to involve their special interests too, anything that will help engage them and get them on board. The NAS Help2 do an excellent seminar on writing social stories so you might want to check if there's one coming up in your area. Otherwise I'd be happy to pass on the notes if you want them.
