processing and perceptual difficulties?

Recommended Posts

Iv'e just had a report back for my son aged 6 who amongst other things has got processing, memory and perceptual difficulties. Is this all part of ASD? I understand the other things such as fine/gross motor problems, literal thinking, expressive language difficulties etc but can anyone shed any light on the above because Im not quite sure what they mean!

many thanks

Hi Caroline,

My 15 yr-old son is diagnosed with Aspergers, dyspraxia and also semantic pragmatic disorder which seems to have something to do with the processing you mention. The guy said they were all related, and the names kind of overlapped.

It seems to be to do with processing information that comes from the outside world - so that an NT person would perceive where their body is more easily in relation to objects, say, and also would process and act on that information more easily. It's like a kind of physical memory, as I understand it. It takes my son many many more times to register a physical process ( eg shoelace tying, or climbing, or brushing his teeth) and make it automatic than it would an NT person.

Don't know if that strikes a chord for you?

Lists of tasks therefore need breaking down much more - if I tell my son two things to do or get from upstairs say, he is likely to forget the second or both, because he needs to concentrate much more to do one, than another person with a more ready access to automatic body memory would. It seems to me like normal everyday life takes up more of his brain than it does for NT people.

Don't know if that's relevant to what you are thinking about

Yes, I can totally relate to that, if I ask Dan to do something for example-go upstairs and fetch his clothes he will come down empty handed, and when I ask him a question-it takes him ages to respond.

Processing and perceptual difficulties require professional advice from people that understand sensory processing eg visual auditory kinesthetic - the earlier the better

However it is often very difficult to get good advice depending on where in the country you are- good luck. If you want advice on reputable people PM me.

Usually private too - and can be very costly for some things eg neurofeedback - which may be indicted in the kind of case you have described

BUT - before getting this kind of help - get biochemistry sorted - it can often sort everything out

Hi, sorry to post on your thread but noticed your post and the replies - my daughter has processing/memory problems and we were told it was part of the ASD - she's been referred to a SALT to find out exactly what difficulties she has (well that was nearly two years ago - and we were told there was a major waiting list as she was being referred to a SALT in a specific specialised field!). Is this something different to ASD then?

What does this mean - sorry if I sound really stupid but I don't understand what can be sorted out by the biochemistry (sorry again).
