Hi not sure if anyone can help my sons school are saying his SEN is emotional, behavioural ,social, what kind of evidence would need to be provided to prove this by school for stat assessment. Anyone got any examples emotional i know what it means but how would they provide evidence would thay have to prove that he is often upset for long periods ie. documentation of such incidents and the same for behavioural, social would that mean he doesnt have freinds at school or what other evidence would they need because my son does have friends, but because they have put him on part time ed this has made this difficult. Hope this makes sense. Mrs F x

Hi F,

Think I would ask them to give you examples and/or evidence of what they mean. My son's SEN's are not academic but social and emotional, basically due to lack of confiedence, self esteem, anxiety and inability to ask for help. The SENCO and her team are working with him on these areas with the support of outreach.

Why have they put him on p/t ed ?

Probably have not been much help, espceially as mu child in on IEP rather than statement.

Hope you find the answers you are looking

Hi I wanted to drop you a note as I had a few thoughts. If I have got mixed up about your earlier posts then let me know.I thought the school were wondering about AS am I right ?

If the school consider that your child has Emotional social and behavioural difficulties and they submit evidence for Sat Assessment -it is a different situation all together to the situation if they were suggesting your child has Social Communication Difficulties/AS/ASD.The sort of support and intervention suggested would also be different.Hence access to Autism outreach services would not be included as part of the provision nor would training for staff re AS.

In many areas children with Emotional Social and Behavioural difficulties who need specialist provision go to a different school or unit to that provided for children with AS.

If you think that your child may have AS/ASD or you have advice from other professionals to suggest that they think it is a possibility it is really important that that evidence is submitted in the request for Assessment.

I think that the main difference in the evidence provided by the school will be not so much in what they describe but more in terms of what is causing the behavior.Hence if the evidence suggests AS then perhaps challenging behaviour would be linked with sensory issues or anxiety or lack of social understanding-the school would need to show evidence of a link.

It may be that the school cannot provide evidence or do not know enough about AS to be able to.Hence they are providing evidence for emotional, behavioural or social SEN.Evidence could include examples of behavioural difficulties or emotional distress. Some schools also observe a child for a period of time and record when the child is on task and when they are not engaged in the lesson. The evidence they provide will vary depending on what the specific difficulties are.I hope that helps.

The most important thing is to challenge any assessment with referrence to Emotioal Social and Behavioural difficulties if you think your chid may have AS.Karen.

Hi again.I have just read your other post re change of class teacher. The school would also need to provide evidece that shows what support they have provided over a period of time-at School Action and School Action Plus.

Hence if as you suggest in the other post there was not a problem before this year and the current teacher-the LEA will wonder why. They will also want to know what the school have done to help. They may well turn down the request for a Statutary Asssessment at the Preassessment stage if the school cannot provide staisfactory evidence. Also from what I understand disciplinary action such as exclusion is not regarded as intervention with regard to SEN and hence the school would need to demonstrate what else has been done.

I know this is not in this post. However I also wondred on what grounds the school have placed your child on a part time time table-as I wonder if this would be regarded as exclusion if is not part of the provision for SEN ? Karen.
