Recommended Posts

Hi all, just a quick question- can I get a reduction on my council tax for getting carers allowence for my son??

He gets higher rate care and low mobility.

It's really confusing?

it depends on the council

we were told only if we needed to make adjustments to fabric of house: for wheelchair or special rooms

look on u council website, and call them they can only say no

good luck

I think someone posted this on here before:

The Carers Disregard is a little known discount. Apparently only 50% of councils are aware of it. The discount is available under statutory instrument 552/92- Council Tax (additional provision for Discount Regard) regulations 1992.

The person being cared for must be:

Receiving higher rate DLA care component or Attendance Allowance

looked after for a minimum of 35 hours by one carer.

Over 18

Not the carers spouse or partner

Living in the same household

More than one person can claim Carers Discount, since there are 168 hours a week theoretically four people could claim.

It can be backdated to April 1993.

If you feel you are entitled to claim be persistent and dont be fobbed off.
