chinchillas

Recommended Posts

wondering what is everyones opinions on them, and does anyone here have them?

what are they like as pets?

are they autie/or aspie friendly,eg,noise issues?

have read some of the wikipedia article about them [says they don't like noise, they prefer to be up at night etc],and it also says they dont like being held, but have been told by night staff who's friend owns a pet shop that his chinchillas like all the rubs and attention, and from what have seen on some chinchilla videos on the internet, they seem to be the same as well.

is it something that depends on the amount of time given to taming and being nice to them?

am finally being allowed to get a pet here [they are cattist and won't allow cats in the house, had a beautiful old cat called fluffybum whom lived outside and had took over the parenting of him a long while ago but found him dead the other week],so they have said can get a caged type pet,and am really like the idea of getting a chinchilla.

have an old cage back at parents home [the marchioro TOM rat cage- http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/rodents/cages/rat_cage/13280 ] as the rats used to live in that before getting them the ferret kingdom, would that be any good/big/suitable enough for a chinchilla if it had some wooden shelves attatched [dad would do this]?

I kept chins for years, I used to have one in my classroom as the class pet and the children loved him, he would come up to the bars all the time begging them to let him out

They can make wonderful pets but if they arent handled from a very young age they are hard to tame, if you can get one from a breeder rather than a pet shop you've got more chance of them being well handled and make sure they let you handle it when you go to see it.

unfortunately the cage you have isn't really suitable due to it having a plastic base, for one it wouldnt take too long for it to chew through it (they love to chew) and for another they like to run around the cage like a motorbike on a wall of death and on plastic they have a habit of slipping and can break their fragile little legs.

If you get a tame one they are happy to come out and have a run around the room but be careful as they love to chew cables and many have been known to get electrocuted that way

they are supposed to be nocturnal but if they enjoy your company they are quite happy to wake up in the day to be with you.

All in all they make great pets if you can find the right one :D
