Does any one get 1-2-1 full time?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I have started the prosses of getting a statement for Ben. While writing my account of his needs I have come to the startling realisation that he will need full time suport and wondered if he will actually get it. Do they ever provide full time LSA's for our kids?

Whats even more worrying is will he actually get a statement in the first place. He has not started school yet and has never stayed a playschool long enough to give an accurate view of him, do I stand a chance?

We got 1:1 support at the first time of asking but he had already had a year at school.

It will help you a lot if your child is incredibly disruptive to the other children in the class and hits them occasionally :(

If you know right from the start that Ben is likely to need such a high level of support you should also give some serious thought to whether a mainstream environment is the most appropriate setting, or some sort of specialist environment would be more appropriate.

Hi Simon,

Do you get it for the whole day?

Ben does have a habit of lashing out I'm affraid, only the other day my daughter had a friend over and Ben wanted a book she had so he hit and kicked her, she was a 6 year old girl who was much bigger than Ben so he isn't affraid of size, which could mean he may come off worse. He also has a tendancy to throw things, you know, the odd chair or table when he gets stressed.

I really feel he will need 1-2-1 full time but worry he won't get it.

Yes, the provision is all day. We were told before the statementing process began that we we had no chance of getting full time 1:1 support for a child with Aspergers in our LEA area and we would have to settle for 12 hours a week. Everyone stuck to their guns and we got full time support.

The school were fully supportive because they felt he needed 1:1 support for the benefit of the other people in the class, they have since let us down in all kinds of ways, but on this issue they did the right thing.

Hi,

my son now 10 has had a statement since age 5, he has a full time (27hrs?) 1 to 1.

This luckily has never altered. When he was originally assessed by the educational psychologist she went into the class room and watched him, the class teacher couldn't believe that on the day of her visit, Dan was not much trouble, so i was worried he would not get many hours......but.....when we went along to meet the ed psych, she said there was no doubt about it that my son was Asperger's and could see the problems he has, so was given a band B i think of 27 hours!! What a relief!

Unfortunately, over the years we have had probs with the school e.g...Dan couldn't cope with assembly, sitting still and amongst all the other kids, he could have stayed in the class room with the c.s.a but was told "Dan you have got to go because I'm busy helping put these dispays up for the teacher!" I found really that she was helping the teacher and not putting his needs first, even though she was being paid from Dan's statement!

Hope you get awarded good hours of 1 - 1, and if you do, just make sure he's getting the help and understanding he needs. Think some schools take advantage really!

Best Wishes

Rach x

Are you sure your son isn't at our school?

During our son's statement review the LEA statementing officer asked why the Full Time Support wan't present. One of the teachers piped up "She does the reading group in the Library on a Tuesday afternoon". Awkward silence before the LEA officer said, I don't think we give you the extra funding for that, do you?

Sadly getting full time support isn't the end of the struggle.

Hi

My son who is nearly 5 receives 1:1 25 hours a week and has done since starting. The school he is at runs a verbal behaviour unit where their teaching is Applied Behaviour Analysis. He really needs it though so my advice would be to really push for it if you feel this is what he requires.

Good luck
