Hi

Yes. We received DLA for my son just prior to receiving his diagnosis. Basically, if you have a child that requires a much higher level of care than a NT of the same age is the criteria for receiving DLA. If you have a diagnosis, it can undoubtedly add weight to a DLA claim, however, given a diagnosis can take years, things like nursery/school reports, reports from consultants, etc can all help for receiving DLA. Basically, DLA and diagnosis are quite separate. The only advice I can give with regards to getting a diagnosis is to not give up. I recall being passed from pillar to post - I often felt like my son was a goldfish in a bowl and was constantly being assessed. Problem was, he was generally being seen by the wrong people for 15 mins a time, when he was behaving pretty well. I kept a diary of all the things that I felt weren't normal eg on Christmas Day my son wouldn't open wrapped presents, instead he'd stack them behind the dining room table and there they would stay until someone opened them for him (he didn't like surprises), outings - he'd get incredibly distressed, etc. In our case, I'm convinced the diary helped, along with reports from my son's nursery manager, key worker, etc. At one stage I had a handful of 19 reports from so-called specialists, but absolutely no answers. At that stage, I became a bit like a dog with a bone. I felt sure my son had AS and I just couldn't sit back and continue to be passed from one person to the next. By sheer chance, someone from this forum (whom I might add, is now a good friend (she knows who she is) who lives in the same locality as me provided me with the name of an excellent specialist. I tried to make contact with this specialist, who in fact turned out to have been off on long term sick leave, and after months of trying/pestering the poor woman's secretary, my son and I finally met her. She was the only person who seemed to 'suss' my son out more or less straight away (where others had failed) and she formally diagnosed my son with AS. It's incredibly hard, but persevere and hopefully you'll get some answers/diagnosis.

Best wishes.

Caroline
