Punchbags

Recommended Posts

I'm after a punchbag for ds#1 who's 8, advised by our hospital consultant after this weekend.

There seems to be a wide range out there.

We did have a child's one for a day before it broke (was already faulty) so I'm not sure if a child's one will be strong enough not and if it would fall over after a good punch!

Also if you have one where on earth do you put it?! The boys rooms are like box rooms, it is NOT going in our living room and there's no room in the kitchen.

Any experiences of punchbags (good or bad) welcome!

Hi, J has a standing free punch bag, its designed for children with numbers on the padding, its designed by martial arts specialist so google martial arts and it will come up, the one J has was 100 pounds which you may say, mmm sounds expensive, but doesnt furniture cost when you have to replace it from been smashed up in a rage, so I would say its an investment, I believe totally in punch bags because when one is angry getting rid of the energy is essential, All anger management books recommend them, anger is not the problem, its how we react to anger that is.

I can pm you the actual website if you are interested in Js design.

dont forget decent gloves too as most bags need them. remember to teach him to punch properly so he doesnt damage his wrist or hands.

Sounds like you may have a punch bag, and maybe punched it wrong? you are very right, but the childrens punch bag I have shared with jlp is padded and vynal and quite safe, though you are right, J has some proper protected gloves, there not proper punching gloves, there rather like a mitten with no fingers, these are only a couple of pounds to buy.

As for punching the main thing to protect is the thumbs, it may be best to check with someone who boxes to show you how to hold your fists and how to strike a punch, at the end of the day though, J has a punch bag to help protect himself because punching a wall, door, person, hurts a lot more than punching and kicking a punch bag, so out the two, its still safer punching a punch bag, but you do have a point.

you can also find both childrens and adult punchbags that you stand on the base and hit, these can go in the garden in summer so take up less space then at least! they seemed quite cheap when i looked, i think they were in the catalog that you then order from the high street

Ive not hurt myself personally apart from splitting open skin when i didnt use gloves one day. I learnt to punch properly in the navy as they did exercise sessions called "boxercise" which is knackering . I dont own my own punch bag just used gyms ones.

I think the most funny time ive used a punch bag was when i went on a therapy weekend and a punchbag was available to get out anger safely but you got to bash it with a pickaxe handlle  Only problem is not many people can choose to be angry at will! You usually need to be sparked off by something.

I do karate and have damaged my hand in the past by not punching properly. It's worth getting some sparring mitts - either martial arts type or boxing - to protect the knuckles. And yes, tuck the thumb in.

my sons teacher reccommended a punch ball in oreder to save the general wreckage around the house that he appears to have wreaked ( and it is rented accomadation) it is a free standing that came with boxing gloves and we are lucky that his room is big enough to cope with the use it gets!!! i would really reccomend it - he does go up there and thump it when life is tough for him.
