dogfish Report post Posted October 14, 2008 Hello all. I am doing a study on autism/asperger syndrome for my PhD and would really like it if i could use some of your experiences and views. In this thread i am looking particularly to hear from young people aged 8-21 years old. I will write about these as part of my study. If you are happy to share, please come and post a little about yourself, i.e.your age, diagnosis, hobbies, etc. Please tell me about your special interests or obsessions. Do you like a certain character, such as Dr Who, or Sonic the Hedgehog? What do you like the most about your special interest? Also, tell me about your friendships. Feel free to write as much or as little as you?d like.

jlp Report post Posted October 14, 2008 I'm a boy, nearly 9 and have Asperger Syndrome. I like to play on my ds and the computer sometimes and I like Pokemon. I have an annoying little brother. The best friends I've had in my life are called Kieran and Kieran and I have two best friends at my old school both called Reece. (I typed for him!) aspiesrule Report post Posted October 14, 2008 Hi Dogfish, I have just had a chat with my son Andrew who is 10 with Aspergers. He will be happy to post for you, but it will have to be tomorrow now as he has just got in from cubs and will be going to bed soon! He will post under my name. He is very articulate so it may get a bit long! Hope the research goes well, if there's anything you need to know there are plenty of experts on this forum, you've come to the right place! Aspiesrule, that would be brilliant, thank you.

aspiesrule Report post Posted October 15, 2008 Hiya. This is Andrew. I'm 10, and I've got aspergers syndrome. When my Mum first told me, I took it all in and understood really well. Thing is, others don't . Some of the other boys at school/cubs say 'Oh well that can be cured', or 'So? It doesn't make you any different'. IT REALLY ANNOYS ME! ARRRRRRRRRGH ! Sorry...I guess I lost my temper there a little (What else is new?). Another thing, well, it's a little embarrassing , I, uh, er, poop myself sometimes . I try to fix it, but I always seem so engrossed in what I'm doing first (Whoo, my arm's getting tired!). I have 3 best friends: Paul, Marcus, and Kai. I often fall out with them, but we're usually back to normal after a day or two. Now, lessee...Oh yeah! I have a limited range of foods, as there are many things I don't like. I also don't like (certain) foods mixed together, ie chips and gravy. That may seem weird, but just imagine chocolate sauce on your sausages and you're halfway to understanding ! I often cry about little things . This is one of my main problems, coz I'm 10 now, and I'm getting teased for it. My main interests are Mario, Zelda, Kirby and Pokemon (Seem to be common interests among aspies) I have a Wii, a DS and a computer. 50/\/\371/\/\35 1 1I3I< 2 7@LI< 1/\/ 13375!111!11!1111116! (Sometimes I like to talk in Leets (Text language)). I feel pretty good most of the time, and tend to think of my AS as advantages, rather than problems, as I'm quite bright, great at spelling, but not so good at sports (But how many people do sports for a living anyway?). Apart from the odd upset, I'm actually quite proud of my Aspergers, despite my difficulties.Sometimes I feel worried but can't tell why . Hope this has helped! I can't think of anything else to write (Or at least my arm doesn't want me to!), but if you have any specific questions, please get back to me and I'll try to answer. From Andrew . aspiesrule Report post Posted October 15, 2008 Hi again, My games are definitely an obsession, as mummy keeps reminding me ! The Zelda game a friend of mine showed me and I thought it looked cool , and the same with Mario . With Kirby, I think he's really cute , and with Pokemon, I really love the fact that there are so many different games and so many pokemon to collect, and each pokemon is different and has a whole bunch of facts associated with it . I think I know almost everything there is to know about Pokemon ! In my opinion, the worst thing about Asperger's is when things happen that I can't seem to control, like pooping and crying , and the fact that I just don't understand other people very well. The best thing is it helps me to be quite smart and especially good at spelling (2 yrs of 10/10 in spelling tests !) and maths and science. Happy to help, any other questions please let me know. From Andrew .
dogfish Report post Posted October 15, 2008 Andrew, i can see why you like those characters. I like them too, apart from kirby which i don't know. I like Sonic because he is cute and cool, and a little bit cheeky. And he is super fast and beats the baddies. Do you think you are a bit like the characters you like, or might like to be? Do you like that the pokemon are all different and have a special power inside? Tell me if i am completely wrong.

aspiesrule Report post Posted October 16, 2008 (edited) Hi Dogfish, Andrew's mum here. Just thought I'd fill in a few details about Andrew for you as he is happy to talk about himself but gets bored with typing or writing after a short while, and wants to get back to his games or his computer! We have been aware of his Asperger's traits since he was about 2, as his rituals, obsessions and need for rules and routines were apparent even then. He was walking at 9 mths, and talking with quite big words and sentences at about 2. He learnt his letters and to read simple words between 3 & 4 and has been a very fluent and expressive reader ever since. He used to eat OK until about 2, then the difficulties started! He has to have everything separate on his plate, any gravy or bean juice on the wrong thing "contaminates" it and it can't be eaten. He likes Sausages, Chicken dippers (only Birds eye!), fish fingers (again, only birds eye!) and a few other selected items. things like Pizza are right out, so school trips and cub camps are a bit tricky, and I always have to check the food situation. He has EXACTLY the same packed lunch every day, and eats things in a particular order, as previous tastes affect the current one. He drinks water, tesco apple juice and milk. Shopping is a problem as we have to get his mini-hot dogs from Asda, his apple juice and fruit winders from Tesco, and his picnic eggs from the co-op! People who don't understand think he is just faddy and I'm pandering to it, but that makes me so mad! He has pretty sensitive hearing, too, and hates alarms going off, loud traffic etc. Also he thinks all raised voices are shouting, so I have to check exactly what happened when he says a teacher has "shouted" at him! He is a stickler for rules, and at school he gets really annoyed if other kids break rules and an adult doesn't tell them off. His pet hate is dinner ladies saying "Just ignore them". Oh, he also hates teachers saying "Stop that silly noise" when he cries. (And so do I, some of them have no understanding - just 'cos he LOOKS like a NT 10yr old doesn't mean he is one!) He used to hate changes in routine but we seem to have got through that one pretty well now, he deals with stuff like that unless it is a source of disappointment that something he thought might happen isn't going to. Then there is trouble! He is coping very well, and is pretty OK with his Asperger's, as you can tell from his post, but he does get very down sometimes and doesn't know why. I have to say this worries me a bit as I feel helpless unless I can get to the bottom of it! I wouldn't say he is easily led like some have said about their AS kids, he has very fixed ideas about right and wrong and I don't think he'd be led into something he didn't want to do. I think the reason he falls out with friends sometimes is that he does tend to go on and on and on about his obsessions and although they are interested in the same things, he has no idea when they are getting bored with too much detail. They tend to go away for a break and then he gets upset that they are ignoring him! He does flap his hands a lot when he gets excited, and can't stand still when he's talking to you, but apart from that he doesn't do much stimming. Let me know if you want any more details, I think it's great that you are researching the topic. Cheryl Edited October 16, 2008 by aspiesrule
aspiesrule Report post Posted October 16, 2008 Hi, Andrew again (Just got back from school). Well, some of the characters I definitely would want to be like! Mario especially, I can do his voice really well. Stomping marshmallows, beating Bowser to a pulp, whacking stuff with a HAMMA! Not that I'd be violent in real life! Also I think some of the pokemon powers would be kinda neat. And I'm not so good at imagining places myself, so it's cool to be in diverse places that the game makers have made for you. As for your 2nd question, you're partly right, it's mainly because there are just SO MANY to catch! And every one is different! Some are really cool like Steelix . Some are really beautiful like Milotic . Some are really smart like Alakazam . Some really tough like Mewtwo . And some are really cute like Togepi . So, does that answer your questions? Any more and I'll gladly answer! From Andrew . P.S: Before you ask, no, my favourite animal is not a rabbit. It's a cat. The bunny emoticon was just really cute. See ya ! Swimming Football, Netball and Basketball RE (I'm non-religious) HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!!!! and teasing... When people tease me (or I fall out with a friend), I just lose my pride, and it 'throws me off track'. They tease me by making fun of my hair (Gingernut, gingernut!) , by stalking me , and by generally just saying nasty things to me. When I grow up, well, I'm a bit about it, you know? av16 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 Hello it's Alex's mum. He's been on the pc for hours so he's having a break and I'm finally on here. It's funny because Al loves youtube too, he spends hours on it, watching films of people playing ps/wii/pc games, funny football incidents and for a while he had a thing about Pennywise the clown. He has a great eye for detail and has spent hours downloading info then using it to create the exact kits for premiership teams in pro evolution soccer, a ps game. He will spend hours on his own with a football - in the dark, in the rain, on the beach in Greece in over 90degree heat practising 'keepy uppies'. He goes to drama and is a great mimic, he likes music especially Keane, he has waited 2 years for their new album, we got it for him today and now he's learnt all the songs. He loves Harry Potter, when he was younger every time we went into Boots he would draw the scar on his forehead at the make up counter. He also loves the Simpsons and can quote hundreds of incidents. He went to a gymnastics club for a couple of years and amazed me at what he could do, he had an accident and then lost his nerve; he decided he didn't want to go anymore so threw his (expensive) kit out of the car window, when we were going over a fly over. He is a complete daredevil with no fear, always has been and he doesn't seem to feel pain, very active and gets bored easily, bright at school, a very literal thinker. I'm posting this with his permission! If you'd like anymore info we'd be pleased to help.

They tease me by making fun of my hair (Gingernut, gingernut!) , by stalking me , and by generally just saying nasty things to me. When I grow up, well, I'm a bit about it, you know? There's 1 thing for sure though, and that is that it will involve science or computers ! Ooooooooooooh... (I've got a really stubborn loose tooth...Ooooooooooh...) Check ya later dogfish ! I'm sorry that you get teased. Why do you think they tease you? What do you like about science?

dogfish Report post Posted October 21, 2008 "I know I have Aspergers because I went to the hospital and someone told my Mam and she told me later. The first Pokemon I ever battled with was Turtwig but I still like all Pokemon. But my Turtwig has evolved into Tortella now. And I named it Hoppy becaus eI like the name Hoppy but I don't know why." Hoppy is a great name. Can you tell me more about pokemon, which are your favourites and why you like them?
dogfish Report post Posted October 21, 2008 Hi, Oliver here, I am 12 and a half years old and i go to a state boarding school... I have Tourettes and asperges syndrome, and OCD, ( obsessive Compulsive Disorder) I understand these disabilities and try to deal with them as well as i can... but my tourettes can really cause me pain, and it does! I would explain all of this, but it would take WAAAAAAAAAAAY to long, and my hands would start hurting. Anyways, I like World Of Warcraft on my pc and have a level 70 Dwarf hunter on Dragonblight Alliance, I also LOVE, pokemon, i had pokemon diamond, but then my brother went crazy and sold my DS with my game inside of it......... wow my neck really hurts, anyway.. I had lots of level 100's and all of the legendaries apart from the Flight form of Shaymin, and dark form of ;;Giratina;;. I have lived a life of being bullied, and i still do, but not as much as i had been. I always get worried about my parents because they always get angry with my 'Brother' Alex.... I still get on with my life... Thats all for today folks!! Be sure to keep reading for Issue 2 of 'Oliver's Life Story!!!' I will write back soon about more stuff, but for now, i have to go From Oliver. Bye!! :) Can you tell me more about World of Warcraft? Is it a pc game or an online game that you play with others? What do you like about it? And what do you like about pokemon? I am sorry that you have been bullied a lot. It seems to be quite common for kids with asperger syndrome and autism to get picked on. It is very unfair. I look forward to issue 2.
aspiesrule Report post Posted October 21, 2008 Hiya! Good news, two bits actually! One, my tooth came out, and two, I'm gonna be in the Gosport Gang Show with the cubs and scouts! As for your questions, I think they tease me because I think and say things very differently, and sometimes they make fun of my voice (What? I can't help it when it gets really high and squeaky when I'm excited, scared or worried!), and mainly because I get upset easily. IT DRIVES ME ROUND THE BEND, UP THE WALL AND BACK ! What do I like about science? WHAT DO I LIKE ABOUT SCIENCE? Say, what do I like about science? (Cue fanfare and audience rolling on floor laughing). But seriously, I'm not sure. I guess the concept of 'getting scientific' and doing experiments just generally appeals to me. Anything else you wanna know, just let me know (Cue 2nd fanfare and 2nd round of audience rolling on floor laughing)! See ya ! P.S: Ya, I changed to ! You like it? P.P.S: I like french fries (Cue 3rd fanfare and 3rd round of audience rolling on floor laughing) P.P.P.S: Yes, I'm putting a lot of humour in this one. Sorry. If you don't find it funny, i'll just edit it out.
