Yvonne Okay here goes, for a statement to be issued it has to be proved that his needs can not be met without one, so does he have any support already in place? Does he have any 1-1 SUPPort, Social/communication provisions, Is he on any school action plus. A register of SEN. Where is he struggling the most. Does he have an IEP and if so are these repeated but never really any progress or limited. It may be that you need to repeat the request of assessment of SEN as it is in a new area, but to get more proffessional help and support there is many educational support. Contact a family, NAS Educational Helpline, ACE, NETWORK 81, OAASIS. Let us know how things develop for you and that the right support can take place. Clare63 Report post Posted November 6, 2008 Hi Yvonne, We managed to get our son a statement at 12 years old. What did the senco say ? might be worth putting in a parential request that's what we did and were able to keep tabs on the process which has strict timescales. Stardust Report post Posted November 6, 2008 Hi Yvonne I have managed to get my son a Statement at 13 years old and at the moment we are currently on our way to getting him a placement is a specialist school as he could not cope in mainstream. So go for it!!! It can be done. If your school are not very forthcoming, you personally, as a parent, can write to the LEA asking them to carry out an assessment for a Statement yourself. Flora Report post Posted November 6, 2008 My son was 13 when he got his statement; he was 14 before we were happy with it (via tribunal). There are people on here who have kids who were even older than that when they got their first statement. It can be done. flora
