What happens at 18?

Recommended Posts

Hi sorry I haven't been on here lately. Hope everyone is ok and looking forward to Christmas or dreading it maybe???

I was just wondering what would happen next year as I've been told by the social worker that when Glen is 18 in April he will have to pay some of his DLA towards his costs for the residential home. How would that work when he doesn't receive the care part of the DLA.. So next year how will I be able to claim DLA for Glen so that he can pay his costs towards the home out of it or do the home themselves deal with claiming DLA on Glen's behalf? If anyone has any answers I would very much appreciate in hearing what you have to say, thanks!

I'm not sure.

I think the best advice you could get would be from citizens advice. They will either have someone who knows about benefits, or they will know who to refer you to.

I think it might be worth getting a complete benefits check completed, not just DLA.

If you need to ask DLA to re-assess the claim, you can ask his current placement to provide information on the level of care he needs.

The company I work for that has 5 residential homes, they have someone in the management team how sorts all these things out. Maybe its worth talking to the home to see what they say.

Thanks very much for your comments it would probably be worth my while in asking the home as I guess they are more than used to this situation and would know what to do.

How are things going at the moment, Joanne? How is Glen coping with the home visits nowadays? Hope things are well settled for you all. Is he coming home for Xmas?

Hi Mel, Glen has good and bad days, he has been going through a anxious/aggressive period but has settled more again this past week. Glen still isn't very good with home visits he is always restless whilst here and wants to go out for a car ride all the time. Glen is coming home on Christmas Eve, just for the 2 nights though, I wouldn't be able to 'manage' him any longer than that and he wouldn't be settled here for any longer. :( I am very worried as to how Christmas Day will go to be honest, my daughter is coming round and she will be having Christmas Dinner with us, so I hope Glen will be ok. He is never the best at Christmas time anyway.

Hi, I have good and bad days. I suffer with osteoarthritis and am on tablets so that doesn't help ;( I do still miss Glen a lot but do with that I could never 'manage' him if he were to live at home anymore, what with my health and with the fact that he can still be very aggressive/strong etc. I know he is in the right place.
