I've noticed that on the same page 'related internet links' they have a link to IPSEA.

Well done to the BBC for doing that. There must be lots of people who still don't know about the great work that IPSEA do.

With a bit of luck it will help others who go through education problems assist them in getting the help that their children need.

Very intersting Annie thanks for posting this I am going to add it to the Campiagn Group. I guess this is part of the reason why I believe that ASD needs be recoginsed as a seperate disability. There are many children who thrive in mainstream with a disability. Sadly for many of our children it is not the right environment.

I have read Mary Warnock's pamphlet and I do not think it can be described as a u-turn. She very carefully describes the thinking that went into her committee's report, the improvements that it brought about, and where she thinks things have gone wrong.

Specifically she makes the - to us, as parents of children with ASDs - obvious point that there is a very wide range of disabilites and needs that have to be addressed:

"It is hopelessly muddled to treat a need for, say, ramps to allow access to laboratories for a physically disabled child as comparable with a need for constant supervision for a young Down?s Syndrome child who is prone to run away."

She calls for small specialist (not special) schools, that can meet the needs of children with ASDs.

I think she writes with great compassion and understanding.

I think one of the big problems that gets ignored is that little can be done about the prejudices of able students who do make it hard for SEN students. Luke Jackson has been cited as an example, the school provided for him pretty well but the bullying never stopped and in some cases it was extreme. He's already written two books but has left school with no qualifications, puts him in the same catagory as me(except I haven't written a book yet).

The issue of bullying is addressed by Mary Warnock in her booklet and is one of the reasons why she suggests setting up small, specialist schools.

She makes the obvious point that a child who is bullied is not being included.

Hi Colin,

I saw Baroness Warnock when she was on 'This Morning' a few weeks ago and thought that she had a great understanding of what is going on with our children.

From what I remember though, she said that nobody else in the 'house' seemed to be interested.

Sounds about right doesn't it?

Hi Annie

She was on Newsnight with somebody called Philip Garner (?) who is apparently an academic. He was clearly an inclusion fanatic who said that he 'didn't recognise the educational landscape' portrayed by Mary Warnock. Methinks he should get out of his ivory tower a bit more.

Colin,

I wonder how people like that would manage in the 'real world'.

Just a thought, I wonder if the colleges at Eton, Oxford and Cambridge etc practice inclusion?

Lucas

Who sites Luke Jackson as an example of someone whom the school system provided for? My goodness I can remember that he had some really torrid times. And maybe the books do not reflect this. My opinion of course.

I have been trying to find this since the news first broke. To be honest I am deperate for it. I want to use it for my dissertation. Please, where can I get hold of a copy?

Carole, I didn't mean to say that he was said to be an example of the school providing well(my recollection may not even be that accurate), I meant that in this case it was highlighted how school bullying policies don't really cover SEN students entirely. This was in a Daily Mail article about a month ago so I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a weblink.

Sorry Lucas I did not understand my fault. No need to look for the link. I do know that he had many problems at school which did have ahuge impact on him.

sorry again
