worried!!

New and confused!

Recommended Posts

Hello to you all :)

The reason I've come on here is because I have just come back from the doctors today with my 9 year old son,

I have believed, since he was very young that he may be ASD and others believe this too.

He was seen when he was 4, and I basically got brushed off and made to feel like a bad paranoid mum!

He was seen today by the same doctor, who has said possibly ASD but could also be Attachment disorder, I have since been home and looked this up and I am horrified to see what and the whys for it.

The problem seems to be that because my son is very very bright and quiet at school, and has one close friend (hes had since nursery) and a few associates, they don't see how he is at home and out and about, etc.

Has anyone else experienced any of this at all?

Or am I going mad!! :)

You are not going mad, you are worried for what you have been told, but there are many here, parents of who have a lot of experience with what you are going through and tomorrow when they are online they will be able to help you.

I apologise for the fact I cannot help you more than I would like for I am one of the affected in that I am ASD diagnosed and have no clue whatsoever what it is like for the parents of those newly suspected.

Hi Worried...........love your avatar.......horses are my thing too.

My son was dx at 7yrs after some difficult yrs at school. What is the state of play now as regards the dr , has he given a diagnosis or referred you on ?Very often children on the spectrum will hold it together at school. Then once at home in a safe environment anxiety and frustration can manifest.Routine is a big thing, A safe quiet place.Their interest or obsession etc. After school my son could not cope with conversations, noise and chaos.I basically had to leave him in front of his favourite dvd for a couple of hours to chill out and vegetate. Not sure what your main issues are but if you put up a thread in general discussion posters will come along to help.

Also initially it can be very frightening reading info from the internet.I felt the same and wondred what a dx meant for my son.He was eventually dx with aspergers, dyspraxia, dyslexia, sensory integration disorder and auditory processing disorder. If you read about them all you,d freak out.Your boy is still the same and anyone dx with anything on the spectrum is as individual as the next person.Just becauseit may say the diagnostic critera for autism somewhere does,nt mean your son will manifest or have all those symptons. My son had very difficult school years and it was thought at one time he would have to be home educated, however he went to a specialist resource at high school which helped him and he is now 17 yrs , has passed his driving test and saved for his first car, and is currently working at a tractor deal ship and is very happy and independent.Tractors have been his obsession since a toddler so he is living his dream.

No, you are not alone, coming on this forum was a good idea you will find many in a similar position as to yourself. What you must do is get all the help and support needed in your home that's my advice. It is better to do this the younger a child is than when they get older.and stronger. Please update us on how you are getting on. Look forward to hearing from you again.
