Son lies on the floor and refuses to get up!

My son is 5 and has started school - must be about a month now. However, he keeps lying down and refuses to get up. His teacher has now said that he can use another door that goes directly into his classroom (to try and avoid him lying down on the floor). Tried it today and yet again he lied down in the playground. None of the other children seem to do this ( he is at a school which specialises in autism and aspergers) It was a bit more difficult today as i was carrying his wee sister at the time. I think this is a game that he is playing but i am finding that i am getting quite stressed about this or maybe i am just being silly..........................

 

Does anyone else's kids do this? If so how have you tried to resolve this?

When does this behaviour occur?Is it at the start and end of the day?

 

I wonder if it is a transition thing?Maybe a schedule or transition card will help.xx

it is when he is waiting to go into school. He also lies down when he doesn't want to do something.............

You'd have to work in co-operation with the school on this.They would need to set up a schedule (visual) to show what exactly he is expected to do when he goes into the classroom.

 

At the start of the day,you would hand him a bit of card and tell him to go and check his schedule.The schedule would outline what he should do eg.hang up coat,put lunch box on table,choose a book,sit at desk etc.Following the schedule at the start of the day would take away that elemnet of uncertainty and may just ease the transition.xx

Hi, you might also find it useful to have a schedule at home so that anxiety is lessened as he knows what is going to happen and can refer to the schedule pictures for reference and consolidation too. I use these a lot for work to help children with transitions and they really do work. Perhaps for your little one as school is new to him actual pictures of school/car/bus/classroom/teacher etc might be better then move onto symbols when he is more comfortable. School should be able to help you with a schedule. After all it is they who will get the benefits!! I am often to be seen with my digi camera taking pictures of school buses, escorts and others.

I am going to get a schedule for him to use in the house - will go down to school armed with my digi camera and take the relevant pictures that I need. School will prob be used to me going around the playground when it is closed as that is what we used to do so that he could get used to the place.....................

my daughter age 3 also does this, but it is an anywhere, anytime laying down syndrome, time to get in car for playgroup, she will flatten herself on floor or sofa, getting her dressed in the morning (not that she stays dressed, prefers the b-day suit im afraid) and the best one is going to the supermarket, we get to the checkout ( i have one of these anti runaway straps that you can buy from mothercare) she lays down on the floor (gross) and when its time to go she wiggles along like a worm! i think i may have laughed at this once as she thinks its hillarious now!

 

What other people must think, i have know idea, nor do i care!
