Private treatment

Recommended Posts

hi. my son is statemented for learning problems and behavioural problems.he has just changed schools from special needs to mainstream.someone once said about dyspraxia.so we started the ball rolling on him seeing a specialist.now after his review a teacher says there might be signs of mild autism/aspergers.now we already have a severly autistic child.what we are thinking is instead of waiting years for a diagnosis.should we go private and save waiting time and find out whats really wrong and put our minds at rest.how do we go about it and has anyone had experience of this.good results etc thanks alison.ps sorry for any poor spelling.

I took my son for a private diagnosis - thank goodness bupa coughed up after a little persuading!!

I could not wait. I found a recognised phychologist with the help of the national autistic helpline folk and using the paris database. We did have to travel about 80 miles but at least we only waited 2 weeks!! Some of the places I called said it'd be about 3 months wait... and these were private!!

We've got a full report and the diagnosis.

We are still going down the NHS route too. A good second opinion and hopefully (am I being niaive?) a guide to local help we may need!

If you'd like any more info send me a pm and I'll let you know what I did.

Good luck,

i took my son private as the doctors round here (oxfordshire) told me i would be waiting for at least 2 years to see anyone but i could attend parenting classes i had already done 4 diffrent courses, so we decided to go private the only place to do this was birmingham so for 6weeks we went up and saw a lovely DR who diagnosed steven with ASD/ADHD at last we thought we were getting somewhere only to be knocked down by the b******ds down here who will not take any notice of the dx we have as it is not from one of there named doctors

:angry::wallbash::angry::wallbash::angry::wallbash:

So 4 years later i am still no further forward than i was then still waiting for someone to decided what help we need.

So i would advise speeking to your GP and see if a private dx would be accepted

You could try

http://www.bibic.org.uk/newsite/about/what.htm

They do assessments, done by a team, and they come up with strategies for the parent to use at home, and I think they write to schools etc. Its near Bridgwater, Somerset. I've done a few seminars there on ADD/ADHD/AS, early behavioural indicators of learning difficulties etc, that they run for continuing professional development.

Might be worth a phone call or email to get some information.

Good luck.

:)

We are currently going through the NHS diagnosis route because I was advised twice - once by CAMHS and second from Bromley House (the NAS diagnosis centre) that if you go private your diagnosis may not mean anything to anyone. They said the school and other services may choose not to recognise it and we would end up going down the NHS route in the end. We decided if we were going to need the NHS diagnosis then it was better to wait. We have the schools understanding that he is likely AS as CAMHS has told them so and they are happy with that until the diagnosis takes place. I wish the NHS route didn't take so long but personally i know something is not right with m and if it takes 9 months to find out and lots of assessments then so be it.

Good luck with what you decide.
