Brook Report post Posted January 26, 2006 Hi all, Just a quick question here, as I'm in the middle of writing something! How would you describe not understanding expressions, facial gestures, a wink, a nod, etc... what I mean is would you use the term 'non verbal communication' to categorise them? please anyone. Thanks Brook

Thanks Brook Bit late to this but is there anything in the follow that helps? comes from one of the reports on J: Autism comprises of impairment in three areas: - Impaired communication - impairment in understanding other people's communication. Inability to understand hidden meanings, metaphor and sarcasm. A tendency to be over literal and interpret language as it is spoken rather than reading the underlying meaning. Impaired social use of language for communicative purposes. - Impaired social interaction - an impairment in receiving and conveying social signals, understanding emotions, feelings and the intentions of others i.e. mind blindness. Lack of empathy and social adaptation. - Stereotyped behaviour and restricted interests - showing restricted play, unusual interests, adherence to routines, and anxiety about change, unable to cope with an unpredictable environment.
