Anneuk Report post Posted March 31, 2006 My 11 yr old dd has now been giagnosed with AS for 1 yr and is doing very well... I had noticed some probs with my youngest daughter... I took her to the doc and he told me that she seemed to have some hyper mobility in some of her joints on right side but poor joint mobility in her lower joints.... She always walks tippy toes when barefoot, and she falls over if she tries to stand straight with both feet flat to the ground.... She also has a few other probs such as frequent bed wetting at least 2 times per week (she is now 9) and sometimes has accidents in the day too.... she is very indifferent emotion wise, but when she does get upset or angry, it is always OTT... The Gp Mentioned Dyspraxia, but said any physical problem had to be discounted before they looked at Neurological so she has been referred to an orthopaedic consultant... Question is, does Dyspraxia often appear alongside AS or in the same families.... I feel so ashamed that I didn't take her to the docs before as she has 'been odd' for some time.... But my time is taken up so much with J our Aspie.... It's difficult to feel up beat..... We are also going to disney Florida on Tuesday and although excited, I am terrified in case J kicks off and gets hysterical.... Are the staff in the parks quite good and understanding?? (worried about getting arrested in the USA for child abuse) Sorry... I don't mail for ages then it all comes out!! Anne
jb1964 Report post Posted March 31, 2006 Hi Anneuk, Don't beat yourself up over not doing anything sooner - it's so hard when all your time and energy is needed to be split in so many ways. Regarding the Dyspraxia thing - yes it's extremely common for this to go hand in hand with AS - my AS daughter hasn't been diagnosed dyspraxia but she has loads of co-ordination (gross motor-skill) problems and I've read loads of posts on here of pretty much the same thing. Can't help on Disney front as I've not been - I know it's a worry especially when anything can start it off - someone will post soon with some great advice. Hope everything goes well and you have a great time. Take care, Jb

(worried about getting arrested in the USA for child abuse Anne Take some identification regarding J's dx and go to the town hall at the park. You will be given passes for all the party to join the queue for rides at the exit saving a lot of time and hassle. I must admit if the queue wasn't too long we did make our dd wait her turn in the main queue. The staff are magnificent. Enjoy your holiday. Kathryn Report post Posted March 31, 2006 Hi Anne, My daughter (17), dx with AS at 15, is extremely hypermobile and started complaining of joint pain and difficulty walking about a couple of years ago. She's recently been diagnosed with Hypermobility syndrome by a rheumatologist and we are waiting referral to another specialist. We were surprised that her physical problems didn't manifest themselves earlier, but apparently it's common for symptoms to increase in puberty, with some tightening up of the joints again in adulthood. Dyspraxia is often mentioned in conjunction with AS, as jb says, amd there is anecdotal evidence of a link between hypermobility and AS. Depending on what happens with the orthopaedic appointment, it may be worth asking for a referral to a rheumatologist. Have a great time at Disney - I can't offer advice as I've never been there - alas! K x
