Canopus Report post Posted June 16, 2006 An independent educational psychologist is actually a contradiction in terms. Educational psychologists are employed by LEAs. Independent psychologists are employed in the private sector. I think you want an independent child psychologist who knows lots about schools. LEA reps won't help so you have to do searching and asking around yourself. Try the internet for dyslexia and AS organisations as they will know who the best independent child psychologists are. madme Report post Posted June 16, 2006 There are psychologists who specialise in education and who were often previously employed by leas but are now private. Have a look at the British Psychology Society www.bps.org.uk - you can search for a chartered clinical psychologist who specialises in education. gOOD LUCK. dONT FORGET TO ASK ABOUT EXPERIENCE OF sendist, SUCCESS AT sendist, woops sorry hit caps, area of expertise. Zemanski Report post Posted June 18, 2006 The NAS may be able to advise here, there are also private assessment centres - we went to one in Cardiff which specialises in dyspraxia (Com's first diagnosis) but has an excellent understanding of AS. Com had a full day of assessment and they produced a very useful report with all sorts of strategies and recommendations - it was not a diagnostic assessment but they do those too. PM me if you want the name. Zemanski
Canopus Report post Posted June 18, 2006 There are psychologists who specialise in education and who were often previously employed by leas but are now private. They probably went private because they wanted to help kids rather than comply with the gag orders of the government. These people are likely to be very useful because they know the education system inside out and all the lies that officials will tell you.

The one we used was v honest and quite brutal about the lea ed psch. She said what we thought - ie that they underplayed everything to make out no needs. Daisydot Report post Posted June 20, 2006 I have used a private psychologist. He wrote a very detailed assessment report for us and did lots of tests to establish our son's levels of ability / disability. We are about to embark on the SENDSIT/Tribunal route, so will be hoping to get him to represent us at this. I think I am not meant to give out names etc online but If you want me to email you direct with his details, let me know. He is based in the london area I think, but he came to our house, which was very convenient.
