    My mum

Sorry to hear about your bad experiemce of social services Re direct payments and assessments An adult is assessed under CC and NHS ACT for what are eligible needs then after a finacial assessment if you have savings over 22,250 you are classed as self funding and pay for your own care (whatever you want) otherwise you may pay a contribution or sometimes nothing at all. Direct payments work in the same way. Make sure your mum is in receipt of all of her entitled benefits such as attendance allowance . Hope that is useful and that your mum feels better soon x

  3. To be detained under the Mental Health Act you must be suffering a mental disorder AND is being/has been ill treated, neglecyed or kept otherwise than under proper control OR living alone unable to care for self.
  4. I will put my hands up and say I have not read all the replies but also to say I have read this forum on and off for a few years I joined hoping I could share experiences and actually help others , I find the derogitory comments towards social services difficult as that is my job I would also like to take this opportunity to say that I wonder why that a family member or a person with a diagnosis of autism or aspergers feel the need to in fact have a forum dedicated to them as it places them apart from mainstream society. My son has aspergers and I embrace that as the person he is there is nothing wrong with it so having a forum that suggests things need to be addressed I too feel out of sorts ,posting here and only do so in case parents of newly diagnosed or those suspecting their chidren need support I hope to help
  5. Why is A.S.D potrayed as something people would not want , for me it is like saying well I will have a child with a certain personanility ....we can't choose that . My opinion is A.S.D is not a negative thing at all just a label given to some peoples personaility .....when i mention to people my son has aspergers they say "Oh i bet he is good at maths " to which I usually reply he is not ###### rainmain ..........Ig havign aspergers is what my son is then yeah bring it on because I would not have it any other way or want it any other way

    Labels

When my son and myself visited camhs I was asked why I wanted a label, I did not want a label unless it would help my son what I wanted and want is a way to best manage the symtoms my son exhibits and how best to deal with them if that can be done without a dignosis then good but it couldn't. Althought my son had approximtely 100 ( 4 permananet) school exclusions 2 from "speacialist " schools it was not until this point he was refered to teir 4 services . He had some previous assessments and light input from professionals that said no way did he have aspers or A.S.D. What the diagnosis did allow tro happen was for the LEA to fund a 24 hour curriculum placement in a school that can work within my son's best interest. I have missed out may detaisl here and also the difficulties that went along with them as this question was about having a label . My son has a diagnosis of aspergers which I have told him (he calls it asparagus syndrome ) he has another diagnosis of pathological demand avoidance (which has no icd classification not that means it isn't for real but I feel he does not have this) We often go camping in our van and meet many different people and my son is put in situations not the norm to him and I allow him to do his own thing and I never have to tell people he has aspergers and if I do they are usually shocked and on the whole he is accepted it is only in the school environment he can not cope but then labels do not matter there as all the boys have one I could go on about this subject and also about my son for ever and have have steered clear from support forums as I accept my son as he is and have felt I do not needo discuss it but then also I want to help/support others and maybe myself by joining in the first place. However I feel I want to state that I am not in denial about my son but I totally accept him as an individual as have many people I know including modern soceity I appreciate it may not be the same for others but I do not see my son as having a label given by others but how I view him as a funny honest loving giving quirky and very good company individual I am also aware I may have come across as a bit of a ###### but having a label/diagnosis does not mean it is correct or incorrect nor does it mean children or adult(with or without lables) are any less of an individual and they that deserve the same rights/recognition as others
  7. I have never heard of this programme but my initial thoughts where why we want someone want to be "cured" My feelings are that individulas without autism such as parents families proffesionals want to "cure" folk .........they may be perfectly happy and personally I beleive it is society that needs to be "cured" and accept people as they are. That suggests a way of life that is unacceptable to individuals but if it is the way of life they lead and they are happy then why change that ?

  11. Try joining this forum lol .anyway I have succeeded eventually ...anyway reason I joined was because I have read this forum for last couple of years but thought I could respond to someone's question but had difficulties signing up so now just here to say hello. My son is 10 will be 11 in may with around 100 school exclusions 4 of them permanent I was/am a lone parent and worked /work full time (2 being special needs schools ) His diagnosis which I had to go to level 4 camhs (another story) is aspergers and P.D.A. (which has no icd classification again another story) he is now statmented for a 24 hour cirriculum so attends a boardign school Anyway joined in the hope I can support others with any queries or difficulties and also to share with you all the joy my son is to me :-)
