  1. HI, I was having a very brief chat to the Head today and she asked how our statementing process was going-we go to Tribunal in Nov. Anyhow I mentioned that dd has had a referrel to GOSH to get a 2nd opinion and then she said and she has been referred to the above.....it's the 1st I've heard about this and she did say that the SENCO will discuss with me when I meet with her next week. I did a quick search for the above and there is one very close to dd's school and it sounds like they refer children there who are not managing on SA+ with Maths/Literacy, that have had several ways of trying to help them at school all fail. Just wandered whether anyone has heard of these and if so how long do the kids go there for, how often, how do they get there etc? Thanks x
  2. Hi Karen, Yes we have applied for a statement and this was refused so we are now going to appeal. We are in Hertfordshire. I have parents evening tomorrow and plan to discuss some issues with her teacher but you know what time is like at these-they try and rush you in and out...... I have contacted the Paed she is under to ask her advice too. What help does your son get being in MS school and statemented and did you apply or the school? Thanks Hi Sarah. Have you applied for a Statement of needs yet ? Where do you live ? Sorry to ask questions to start with but it makes a difference as to what ideas might be helpful. We have Ben who is 11 and has AS and dyspraxia.Ben has a Statement and in mainstream secondary school. We have also had times when Ben has been very unhappy at school. He was asking earnestly to leave just a few days ago so I understand how difficult it feels. <'> If the same pupils are saying unkind things on a repeated basis this may be verbal bullying. We have had similar issues. We have now started to record all incidents and have contacted the school to notify them that we are sufficiently concerned to do so.This was as per the advice of the CAMHS professional who worked with us.He regarded the case as low level bullying. Even for pupils who do not have SEN the school should have an anti-bullying policy.Do consider asking for a copy and documenting your concerns. ACE produce an excellent pack on bullying which details what bullying is and what options are open to parents. It explains much better than me.I will find a link for you. 3. Hi I have a dd of 9yrs in Yr 4 who we are in the process of appealing for a statement of needs for her. She has complex issues/needs-really struggles at school-has ADD, ASD, Dyspraxia-is on SA+ but for the past 2 months not a day goes by when she doesn't come out of school and the minute we get in to the car she bursts in to tears-always telling us the same-how kids in her class tease her, tell her she's weird, how she can't keep up with the work, or doesn't always hear what she has to do. Tonight things with her were awful-this poor little girl was sobbing for about 2hrs-she has written a letter to the SENCO at school saying she is unhappy as people are horrible to her but she has only just fallen asleep after telling me she is "worthless, an idiot, ugly, wishes she'd never been born". My heart is breaking for her-I just don't know where to go from here-when I discuss anything with school they just tell me that they don't see anything wrong at school and that she appears happy?????? Any advice of where to go from here???? Thanks x
  4. Hi, I am after some advice please-I am new to this site although have read allot of the topics which are very useful. Basically my daughter in Yr 4 is really struggling both with the school work but more so emotionally and behaviour wise. Not a day goes by when she doesn't come home from school sobbing her eyes out-that children call her weird, she has no friends, hates school, her teacher picks on her etc etc-this is REALLY affecting her to the point where she is just so unhappy and is taking it out on us when she gets home. I have several talks with her SENCO about this but all I get told is that they don't see any issues at school and wander if she is just manipulating us??????????????????????????? Sorry but we know our daughter and know that she is very very unhappy-has started bed wetting, having nightmares-begs us to change her school, home ed her. She has always struggled with friendships-has never had a best friend, falls out with children very easily-no matter what their age-she will pick arguements with 2yr olds not realising it's not appropriate. She is an adopted child-been with us since 1yrs of age. She has been under CAHMS for 2yrs and had several assessments all which show she has issues-dysleia, dyspraia, traits of ASD. I have recently applied for a statement of Ed Needs for her and although I sent in alot of evidence from all reports etc-but it has got turned down and we are going to meet with the SN officer from the LEA on 6th April to discuss the refusal but obviously we also want to appeal this. I have been in contact with 3 Ed Psychs today and non of them are available to carry out a private assessment before Aug. Where do we go from here-how do we appeal-do we just send the same info we sent in to LEA ? Also where do we stand at school? Who do we talk to about dd being so unhappy? Thanks so much, S x
  5. Thanks so much Sally for your replies-you are so full of knowledge!!!! I have decided I need to discuss this with the Paed this week-as I cannot believe that her teacher can have a 5 min conversation with the Paed and all of a sudden everything we have said/discussed with Paed is out the window!!!!! I will also contact the NAS this week and seek their advice. And I have been in contact with PP and will email her with the latest.....she has been fab with lots of help and advice. DD has been seen by every professional going-all except SALT!!!! Oh I just feel I have such a fight on my hands................. Thanks, S
  6. Thanks so much for your reply-yes we are in England. I am meeting with the SENCO this week anyway for a routine app that I have with her every 4-6 weeks just to see how dd is getting on. She has been seen by every professional going-Ed Psyc, Clin Psyc, OT, Paed and the only one we've never been referred to is the SALT. I am aware that some of her behaviour could be due to attachment issues but I just find it so hard to think that her teacher can say something over the phone to the Paed and all of a sudden the whole diagnosis of ASD is no longer the case-after a lengthly conversation with the Paed who said she def had it. When she is at school she is medicated for her ADHD and if she is anything like she is at home when she has had her medication-she is quite, and just keeps herself to herself-not impulsive and silly as she is when the meds wear off-so yes the teacher has seen her confidence improve through the year as she has started on Meds in Jan and this has been increased x3 over the past 6 months. Oh I just don't know where to go from here-I'm thinking I need to speak to the Paed again and see whether we can get her properly assessed for ASD-as I just don't want these things being left-she is 9 this year and has the behaviour of a 5 year old most of the time-and ticks all the boxes of ASD. Thanks again, S
  7. Hi, I posted on here a couple of weeks ago with regards to my dd who had been seen by our Paed who is treating her for her ADHD-and we discussed alot of her "odd" behaviours and her social skills and lack of friends etc-the paed went through several questions with us on a questionaire and said that dd was on the Austistic Spectrum and had Aspergers. I have been today to the OT with DD and asked for the report to take to the GP and on reading this-all the way through the Paed mentions all the difficulties etc dd is having-then in the last paragraph says she had a phone call with her teacher at school(who is a part time teacher and only does 2 days a week-in a class of 30) and now due to the teacher saying she is "OK" at school-does need help socialising but once she has had the encouragement and help to do so-she is ok-that the Paed now says that due to her converstaion with the teacher she doesn't think she has Aspergers????? I find this very odd-we as her parents spend allot more time with this very difficult little girl who has some strange ways that really do impact on her everyday life see these problems and yet her teacher can say what she has said and all of a sudden the problem no longer exsists??? My dd is adopted with siblings who all have similar problems so this is our concern as well. My concerns are that school are not wanting to have to provide any further help (she is already on SA+) and I have told the SENCO that I would be thinking of applying for a statement-as it really concerns me that we need to get things in place-she is behind both acedemically and emotionally and socially-and now it makes me think that school might just be saying this to get out of anything??? What do you advise me to do-where do I go from here? Thanks, S x
  8. Hi there, Thanks so much for your reply-yes my dd does want friends but just doesn't seem to have the social skills to be able to do this-I do feel for her as in her class of 30 there are only 9 other girls-alot of them very mature for their age-whereas dd is very young for her age-I have spent several meetings at school discussing this and they just don't seem to do anything-the last time the SENCO said to me "Well if she likes reading on her own at lunchtime then we just leave her to it"-she does this as she has no friends to play with!!!!!!!!! You say you are beginning the statementing process-are you doing this yourself or have the school started it? I am seriously considering requesting one for dd-as school don't seem to think she is bad enough to get one-they don't have any of the dreadful behaviour we get at home-which is really hard work and I often think alot of it is down to school as during the hols and weekends she seems a lot happier!!!! Thanks, S
  9. Hi there, Wow-thanks so much for that long reply-all very useful. My dd has been seen by alot of professionals but never by SALT?? Should we be asking for this-at present she is under a Paed for her ADHD and she was recently seen by Clin Psyc for a lengthly assessment. We are also under OT for her DCD. What would the SALT be doing for her? We also see a family therapist monthly who does sessions with her. Thanks x
  10. Hi, I am new to this site and just wanted to introduce myself-I am mum to an 8yr old dd who was just last week diagnosed with Aspergers. She also has ADHD and DCD (Dyslexia/dyspraxia & sensory issues). She is in Yr 3 at school and on SA+. At present she is crying almost every night-as she feels sad that she has no friends. Who do I need to get involved in talking to school about her issues-as they don't seem to want to see she presents with any problems-I am at present also about to start a request for statementing as I just don't feel as if school are doing enough-and she is really battling all round. She has no confidence at all. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks S
