  1. but child's teacher is expressively forbidden by jcq from that role.
  2. i am a special needs lsa, i have supported my pupils in class and then in their exams. usually in a separate classroom or office, with me and an invigilator looking after the pupil. the management are now saying that the invigilator has to be the prompt as paying for 2 members of staff per student per exam is too much. i think that this is unfair, that the pupil needs the presence of their familiar adult, and someone who knows when to intervene and when to step back in case a meltdown threatens. what do you think??
  3. might be worth an eyesight check too.
  4. i don't like the term social and communication difficulties - when abbreviated it is SCD which for years has been the abbreviated term for sickle cell disease. the potential for confusion is great, and shows a lack of awareness of special needs issues from those using it.
  5. it is a simple to use note taking word processor, that downloads easily onto a pc, where the work can be edited and saved. it is quick to use, requires no setting up and has several folders so that work can be saved for several subjects before downloading. however - i use it mainly for students with physical disabilities, particularly temporary ones. only being able to view one line at a time cold well be frustrating for a student on the spectrum.
  6. being bathed by mum is not the same as bathing/showering yourself. someone on the spectrum will need to be shown how to wash themself - it is not the same as having someone wash you!
  7. hello everyone if Lorna wing had been writing in the 1950s/60s i may well have been diagnosed with as. but i wasnt. but i think its fairly clear that i tick all the boxes! my hubby is probably as too. as is my son, and daughter. i have another daughter with ocd. i was an lsa, but now am a qualified teacher, working in FE with students with as. mostly very clever people. looking forward to finding out more about families affected by as, and discovering coping strategies.
  8. surely it is the senco's job to write the iep, the statemant is written by the ed psych. the statement just says what the childs diagnosis is, what provision is appropriate. the iep is the detailed document that says how many hours of support, what that should be, wht the learning targets are etc... and should be written by the senco, or by a suitably qualified person - ie support teacher, nursery nurse, ( not LSA) the senco should be wrewritng the iep on a regular basis to take into account new learning and situation changes. the statement is a very general document, the iep is specific to that child at that time
  9. i support students doing btec level 2 and 3, and a level students, in a mainstream provision. it is our beleif that it is better for the support tutor not to be an expert in the subject - that way it is easier for the work to be the students own, not the tutors. i frequently pretend ignorance - to ensure that my students coursework is their own! this SENCO needs to move on!!! the only time we use subject specific qualified tutors for support is for scribes in exam conditions.
