bevalee Report post Posted December 5, 2006 Hi Tracy My son was nearly 15 when i applied for a statement, he was also being tutored at home. I also went to tribunal and won a placement at an Asperger's Specific school named on the statement. Don't let your LEA fob you off! Bevalee
Kathryn Report post Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) can she be statemented when not in school???? Yes is the short answer, as Bevalee and other on this forum can prove. My daughter went through the assessment process when she was at home. if so where do I start? You can start the statementing process by writing to your local education authority to request a Statutory Assessment of your daughter's special educational needs. You can do this whether or not the school supports you. Here are a couple of links to help you. About the statutory assessment process Requesting Statutory Assessment including a model letter you can use. Home education is a separate matter. Your daughter should be receiving tuition whether or not she is statemented, as home tuition is based on a medical need. To qualify your child has to have a medical condition, (and this includes depression and stress, not just obvious physical illness). You normally need a letter from a GP or consultant sayiong that your child has been signed off school due to a medical condition - I think you do have this if I'm remembering your previous posts correctly. The LEA department dealing with this is usually called Home and Hospital education or something similar, you can look them up on your Council website. They have a duty to provide at least 5 hours tuition a week, which would probably include Maths and English and possibly Science, and they must liase closely with the school to ensure that the curriculum is appropriate. This should have been started within 15 days of her being off school. The LEA and the school are a long way behind meeting their obligations here. Getting your daughter back into school may be a long term goal but it should not stop them from providing suitable alternative education for her, if she's up to it. Demand it, and don't be fobbed off or bullied into sending your daughter back if she's not ready. K x Edited December 6, 2006 by Kathryn
