In MY humble opinion there are so many different aspects to ASD and depending on what is strongest, that's what you get labelled with. But soooo much, including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, NVLD, SPLD and so on has elements of autism to it, and most say that "Oh if you overcome the [main] problem then the autism goes away." Well that's rubbish, it's like saying a child stops having ADHD because they stop being hyperactive (and then wondering "Why is he still so forgetful and inattentive?").

IMHO the autistic spectrum contains a massive load of different pieces, from motor problems over language to sequencing and attention problems etc. etc. and depending on what is strongest, that's what you get labelled with. That doesn't mean, however, that the other aspects aren't there.

Hi my ds was dx'd as dyspraxic at 6 years old but that changed to AS when he was 10yrs and now it has been changed to PDA at the age of 15yrs. I have always thought my son had elements of lots of conditions as he has also been dx'd as ADD and Tourette syndrome (TS) in between these ages.

I definately would agree with Noetic's post.

Hi I think Dx can come down to who is assessing and the areas they specialise in.Ben has a Dx of DCD[Dyspraxia]from OT plus social communication difficulties [AS bit but not enough for clear Dx][From salt] plus anxiety/emotional issues [From Camhs].Karen.

Although dyspraxia is a condition in its own right, dyspraxic symptoms are really common in autism. Whether you'd get the diagnosis of dyspraxia as well as autism depends on whether the symptoms are severe enough to cause a problem.

My son was Dx dyspraxia when he was two. it was only as he grew that the 'clumsy' aspect improved and then at 11 he was Dx Aspergers which we feel is a more acuurate diagnosis. The two conditions overlap with many others. It is a very grey area.
