school bus violence

Recommended Posts

P was hit in the face by another pupil and left with a bleeding lip whilst on the school bus today. we're going in with a formal complaint tomorrow but, have any of you any similar experiences which could help us resolve this?

The escort was useless, by the way. He got out the first aid kit and handed it to P's sister....and did nothing about the incident.

I know damn well the school will insist it was accidental but i've had enough of them excusing action against P on the grounds that he "winds the other kids up".

Sounds pretty awful.

The escorts are employed by the LA, well they are in our LA, I suppose you could try complaining to them. Do escorts have to keep records or an accident book on the bus ?

I would keep a diary of incidents if anything happens again and photos if you can.

Hope they listen to you.

I reckon you're doing the right thing Pippin (for what my opinion's worth). Just because people wind someone up (intentionally or not) doesn't mean that they can go around hitting them. If that was the case, half the people I work with would be in hospital

I work as an escort on school buses

Escorts are supposed to report all incidents in writing imedialty to there superior.

As a parent you have the right if youre child is constantly being picked on and assaulted on the bus to request he is put on another bus or the child doing the hitting is taken off.

Always report the escort to the powers that be if youre not happy.Put it in writitng

Another tip if you know who else travels on the bus get the names of the parents and phone numbers phone them up compare notes you might find others are haveing issues with the escort get them to also complaine.

I once did this and got an escort removed from transporting my son coz she was useless and caused alsorts of problems.

If the escort isnt up to preventing youre child from being hit then he or she shouldnt be doing the job...........

I sometimes have to physically get between strapping 6 ft teenage boys and there victims to prevent all hell breaking loose. It can be scarey but its better they take a swing at me and they often do than bash a smaller child.I always report it imediatly any form of abuse .

Good luck

My mum is an escort on a SEN school run. If she has a child on her bus that "winds the other kids up", then she will sit next to that child and try and keep them distracted, as well as safe from any retaliations. She also does any first aid that is required too. Sounds to me like the escort could and should be doing alot more to prevent the situation. I think its quite sad that good escorts seem few and far between, the one who takes my son to school is lovely, but the one he had 6 years ago was dreadful. Some of them seem to think all their job entails is sitting next to the driver and talking about the weather!

Thanks everyone. Hubby went in this morning to complain (I had to take my Mum for an appointment). The HT agreed to act against the child who hit P and was grateful for ammunition to use against the bus company as there is a lot of unease about the escort. He did play down the bullying in school but I suppose "2 out of 3 aint bad". He wants us to directly contact the bus company too....I'm getting bervous just thinking about it. Ah well!

Hi pippin,

My son was punched in the face in his school taxi by an 11 year old (he is 8). It caused him to have a massive meltdown. The escort didn't even tell me what had happened. I reported the incident to the Head and my son was changed to another taxi. The boy who punched him was summoned to the Head for a good talking to. I know they have SEN and my son can be pretty annoying, but they need to be made aware that hitting is not acceptable.

It worries me that your son's Head played down the incident, especially as he caused P to bleed :o . How old is the boy in question? Did the Head speak to him about what he'd done?

Hi, the lad in question is 8 also..in the same class as P. The HT spoke to him and he apparently admitted it and apologised to P so I'm fairly happy with that. My older daughter says the rest of the school were asked to "be a bit quieter" on the bus (rolling eyes smilie required!!) and our letter has been passed onto the LEA regarding the escort. P travels on the standard school bus and has no escort of his own (he doesnt need one if they dont wind him up!!). I just wish the school would put more effort into teaching kids to respect each other. Well, none of my 4 will be going on the bus til it's sorted out!!
