hedders Report post Posted March 29, 2007 What Professionals are needed for this, can parents still get a diagnoses without a SLT involved? Or if a SLT say they dont have any language diffculties?
Flora Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Hi hedders, I think it varies according to where you live. When Bill was dx it was his year teacher who suggested he was seen by and EP... the EP assessed him and said he thought it may be AS..... as a result he was referred to CAMHS.... assessed there by child psychiatrist and Clinical psychologist.... who confirmed it was AS. He was only referred to SALT after dx... and that was for Social Language courses etc.... he never needed any speech and language therapy because apart from the usual social language difficulties he didn't have a language disorder. It was the opposite with Ben, who was seen by EP in school then referred for full assessment with SALT.... meanwhile he was seen at CAMHS but SALT were brought in too because he had significant speech and language disorder and needed lots of therapy for this. Reading the posts here it seems that every area is different. Flora
hedders Report post Posted March 29, 2007 yea im a bit worried, i dont know what the pead might do when she recieves her slt report saying she has no language diffculties, in regards to ASD, feel a bit hopeful about your comment with bill though. I dont know if ASD children do have language diffculties or there is a difference to social language skills. Ive read up on speech and language diffculties and dd does display this but keep being told her understanding is really good Who is the best person to observe if she has poor social skills. Flora Ours was much the same route as Flora - my daughter was diagnosed at 12yrs - she'll be 14 this summer and we were referred to SLT after dx - and still on the waiting list! - she's been referred to a very 'specialised' SLT and we've been told it's a long wait because she doesn't have a severe language problem (in speaking/verbal etc) - she has more difficulties in understanding the subtle differences in meanings and interpretations of language - which she said is common in ASD. Take care, Jb

curra Report post Posted March 31, 2007 My son was referred to a child psychiatrist by the GP when we lived in Scotland because he was too stressed, but no diagnosis was made. His school believed that he was autistic but they never asked the Ed Psy to confirm it. Later a teacher in primary school in England thought that he should be seen by the Ed psych and I agreed. The ed p's report says that M has no language difficulties, but stereotyped movements and social difficulties and that he would fit a dx of ASD. Things were left there and nothing more was done. I asked my GP for a referral to the pead, who asked M some questions and he immediately issued a dx of aspergers syndrome. This dx has been questioned several times because M is very bright and articulate, but it was later confirmed by a child psychiatrist. What is SALT? I've never heard of it Curra
hedders Report post Posted March 31, 2007 Speech and Language Therapist to the question above. When i was chatting to the salt i was saying that she gets confused about words or pictures which are the same but have different meanings i got quite indepth about it e.g birthday cards christmas cards spaghetti spaghetti bolognaise grandad papa So its was quite interesting about flora i wondered if these sort of things dont get picked up by SALT before a diagnoses.
