News article - aspies dont need help?

Recommended Posts

It doesn't surprise me a bit.

A classic case of 'The Normals' assuming that people with AS have the same profile for academic learning ability as they do for learning social skills, which (we know, don't we children?) they don't.

Hmph.

I've been told this before when trying to get respite care. DS2 is not classed, by social services as having a learning difficulty as his IQ is too high. That's been the case round here for a long time. Recently we tried again for respite - or rather now he's older, someone to take him out socially and help him with learning independence skills. He's 22 and has lotf of difficulties including being unable to leave the house alone except for a couple of well rehearsed places, can't go into a shop, use public transport etc etc The letter from social services refusing him, said that though they agreed he had "social" difficulties, he doesn't have global developmental ones, so again we don't qualify. We've had no support of any kind, for many years, except for education and we're having major problems with that now. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that through not having the support he needs, he's become so stressed he's showing signs of mental illness as well as Aspergers, so now he qualifies for the help through the mental health team! Though its great that he's getting some of what he needs at last, why oh why couldn't they have given him this help before he became so stressed and ill? :wallbash: In the long run it will cost them more in money and cost us more in so many other ways.
