Ian Jordan Report post Posted July 29, 2007 With all due respect to the OT - what the hell is she going to do? If you have a visual processing problem an OT assessment should be undertaken after an assessment by a competent optical professional. An eye test is not good enough - you need a visual processing assessment - and that needs specialist optical instrumentation. An OT is limited in vision - but they definitely should be part of the team. The optical professional should then work with the OT, education, audiologist, SLT, psychologist to get the best results - we do it a lot!
aro Report post Posted July 29, 2007 My dd had someone from the sensory impairment team come and see her at school and is going to come and work with her in Sept, this was because we want her vision assessed beyond standard eye sight test. Not sure what tests he can do though A x
Ian Jordan Report post Posted July 29, 2007 Our assessment takes about 2 hours and results are immediate. ie we expect improvements in a second
Bagpuss Report post Posted July 29, 2007 Ian, my dd is under the care of the eye dept of local hospital (just added another thread in Help & Advice). Do you think it would be worthwhile mentioning to them what the paediatrician has said re dd and visual processing probs? The reason he has referred her is because she keeps walking into door frames at home, runs into door handles and shelves etc in shops. She is really clumsy, and we think she could have dyspraxia, but when I mentioned it to the paediatrician he said due to the MD it would be impossible to test for, but he felt she had visual processing probs and wanted an OT to see her. aro Report post Posted July 29, 2007 Ian, if I could get up to your clinic I would, but the SW of Wales to Ayr is a bit too far (especially with a 4yr ASD daughter ) Don't suppose you know anyone in south Wales who can do the same tests as you....or if you are doing an "Ian Jordan on the road" tour soon? Bagpuss...my dd is under the eye dept too (squint both eyes ) but when I asked about perception test etc the consultant said, "we don't do those, don't have the machinery!" so that was that! Ian Jordan Report post Posted July 29, 2007 I am lecturing in Cardiff on 12 November - not fully finalised venue - think it is at university. Don't know details of contacts etc I think it is a full day - if so it will be VERY intensive - but understandable. I don't know whether it is open to the public, 90% of my presentations are private - but they sometimes can be gatecrashed by a determined parent (with my approval!). I think it may be a lecture theatre type of presentation - with theory, assessments, videos and demonstrations. If you can get along do so - my lectures are usually is quite dramatic and will shock the majority of parents with children on the spectrum. Ian Chalmers in Albany road Cardiff may be able to help - but 4 year old is difficult (possible though) but ask him whether he wants to assess first. He's very good and cares a lot. Another alternative is Jo O Neill at Norvilles opticians in Gloucester - she does a free screening. She is great with yougsters. best wishes ian
aro Report post Posted July 29, 2007 Thanks Ian, I will look into those . She's 5 in Sept, but don't suppose that makes much difference, she didn't cooperate with the standard hearing test assessment with the school nurse so may need to wait awhile. elun1 Report post Posted July 29, 2007 Even if you did manage to do assessments though I wonder what could actually be done to help my ds (age 6, ASD and SLD) I've always thought his visual hyposensitivity are part and parcel of his autism? How does one access your lecture in Cardiff to find out more? We live South west wales too Thanks Elun
