krystaltps Report post Posted August 7, 2007 It can be quite different depending on where you live, but here's our experience: After the Ed Psych completes his/her tests, a report will be made, and you will have an appointment with ed psych. Next step will be the SALT, who will also do some tests, write a report and make an appointment with you to discuss. The SALT's report will determine which ADOS your child receives. The ADOS is the main diagnostic tool for ASD and it comes in 4 levels depending on maturity and speech and language development. Some people receive the results of the ADOS there and then, we had to wait two weeks, as C's ADOS was performed by a sub-area team who videod it and it was then reviewed at the main diagnostic centre. The ADOS, along with the ed psych report, SALT report, school report, and of course everything the parents have said is all taken into account when forming a diagnosis. The whole process for us took about 7 months, but it really speeded up after the ed psych finalised his report.
Confusedmum Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Hi krystaltps, Thanks for your reply At our first appointment, the ed psych was there along with pead and speech and language therapist, they decided that DD wouldnt need to see speech and language again as she dosent have any problems with her speech, and when the ed psych made our appointment for the IQ test, she said that she evaluate it there an then and let us know the out come of the test. also i probably should have said in my first post that she is being assessed for AS, as im not sure in the assessment is the same across the spectrum,so would time scale/assessment that krystaltps said still be the same?? hope this makes sense, and please set straight if not. Thanks again and sorry for rambleing, this is all very new to me, so im not sure how it allworks.
mum22boys Report post Posted August 7, 2007 Hi, The whole thing seems to vary where you live. Also the route to diagnosis also seems to vary. In Hertfordshire our first starting point for a school age child was a referral to CAMHS. They then decided they didn't know what to do with M so he was discussed in 2 peadiatric meetings before it was agreed to put him on the Communication Disorder clinic list. In the meantime he had a Speech and language report, which identified lots of problems and so the speech therapy began. He was seen after being on the CDAC list for 4 months by the consultant who was likely to eventually assess him just to make sure he was on the right list!! He was and he waited another 16 months to finally be assessed. His diagnosis took us 2 years in all of waiting on lists. In that time he had 4 speech thereapy assessments, not to mention therapy itself. He had a pre-CDAC assessment by the Ed psych a month before he was finally assessed by CDAC. But the ed pysch report was only made up of what our views and the views of the school were as she couldn't even approach him, he ran and hid in the corner of the room and refused to even look at her, let alone be assessed. The route taken for a pre-school child is different though. My youngest is also on the CDAC list but you do skip the CAMHS bit. The special needs health visitor becomes involved and we have had more regular visits to the pead whilst waiting for his assessment. As said before, it seems a bit of a postcode lottery as to how long you wait for diagnosis. Where we are it seems an eternity! Good Luck. Do you not have a clinic or hospital you can phone to check progress. I spent most of my time chasing things up and believe it or not it took 2 years and that was to get a cancellation appointment! mum22boys
ASue67 Report post Posted August 7, 2007 In our area we get referred through CAMHS. It takes forever................ it has taken me nearly 5 years of battles and going backwards and forwards through my GP and referrals to CAMHS to get a dx. The final process which started around Jan 07 has taken 6 months (he was dx last month). I hope you have better luck where you are! It does seem to depend on where you live as to how long it takes and the route you go down. Good luck!
