DLA for Speech disorder only?

Recommended Posts

As DS2 is only diagnosed with severe speech language and communicaton disorder, gross motor skill disorder and attention disorder (but not ASD yet), would this be enough to claim DLA as he is not yet 3? I didn't claim for my eldest till he was 4 and going to school, but he had more severe routines and obsessions. And it was more obvious how he was different to other children.

Has anyone had a successful claim based on comunication alone?

Also, does anyone know of any forums that are just speech/language that are regularly added to? I had a look at AFASIC, but it hasn't been added to for months, It would be great to find another one with a community spirit like here!! Failing a specific forum for speech disorder, I'll just have to post here - it is likely that he has an underlying undiagnosed ASD condition!!!!!!

possibly speech and language delay might the first signs of something else underlying but only time will really tell. or it maybe not...

my own ds at 3 was unable to speak totally and at four began to speak. even at this age he wasnt given any dx of speech/lang only that he had difficulties. had i known then what i know now i wouldve pushed for a proper assessment and i would definitely have tried for dla..

its only now at 9 he been dx with asd and speech and language delay..you are on the right track...

the thing with dla is you can only try..

Hello before J was diagnosed with ADHD he had all the same diagnosis as you have and we recieved DLA though J was older, he was 6yrs old, what you need to prove is that your child needs more assistance, supervision, support than another child who does not have the disability, your son is going to need support in all areas of communication, he will need assistance in all interactive situations, you will need to supervise him in areas that he could come at risks so near roads, as he will not understand verbal requests, or react to normal communications he may visual support, sign or gestures for him to understand, he will need supervision with other children/adults as he may not understand other peoples instructions, verbal commands, he is vulnerable and at risk due to his social and communication disorder, you need to express how much support he will need when washing, dressing, eating, sleeping, all which will need lots of support and assistance due to his SCD, and SLD, again support it with evidence that he may use visual aids, sign, gestures and prompts, again if he is ADHD he will need supervision to ensure safety and minimise risk of any impulsive behaviours, do you support him when he needs any needs at bedtime, or during the night, extra needs more than another child without the disabilities that three years old, my son needs supervision as he may come to harm that are all part of his disorders.

Does he recieve any support at nursery, are there any services offering therapy for his SLD and is he involved in any Social skills support? is your child included in the Special Educational Register, this in itself expresses concern and tells the LEA that this child needs extra support than other children.

DLA goes on care and what extra needs your child needs that may be more than a child who does not have a disability.

Ask your specialist to refer you to the Welfare Services, or ask your local MP to refer you as they can really help with the forms.

Hi Michelle -

J's mum has summed up the situation very precisely - the DLA claim/award is assessed on the basis of the support needed over and above that for a 'non-disabled' child of the same age...

That's harder to assess in younger children, because younger children need more support generally anyway, but age is certainly not a barrier...

The information sheets on this site detail the kind of info the assessment is based on:

http://www.bhas.org.uk/

Making the process much easier to grasp.

There's another link on the forum to a similar resource, but i can't find it right now, but that said I've always found this one to be detailed enough...

Thanks everyone - I guess my main obstacle is knowing what a typical 3 year old is like at home. I've been through the DLA process with DS1 3 years ago, and it is so daunting having to try to analyse everything.

Luckily DS2 has a good SENCO at nursery who can probably do a good job of comparing him to the other boys in his group during the day.

Update:

Just got result from DLA! I got medium care for him, and he is only just 3! And it is until he is 7 I think- I wasn't expecting to get anything - and now I also get more child tax credits - both back dated to mid October, so I'm well pleased!

:thumbs::groupwave::thumbs:

So what with getting LEA to back down straight away and agree to assess, I'm having a great new year!

Apart from worrying what the Ed psych is going to be like  everything is looking positive!

That is good news and good that he gets it until 7 thats 4 years but keep collecting information and photocopy any reports and send it in, I always photocopy the forms I send in too including the dla form.

When it comes to renewal request support from your welfare rights, the NAS and contact a family have some further information on DLA including Mobility Allowance which is given to children whilst outdoors if they require supervision for safety reasons.

Good Luck and well done.

Great news.

Well done hun.

Unless I've missed it somewhere on here and perhaps someone has already mentioned this, but you can also apply for Carer's allowance.......okay this will depend on if your working and what you earn, and does not matter if your other half works or not as this is an allowance for yourself.

Good luck and glad you got there.

Di good one there, its always good to mention the carers allowance as the DLA and Carers dont work together and let you know, I missed out on carers for 6 months because no one told me until the welfare rights where intouch, its so annoying that the benefits dont let the parents know.

Hi JsMum, not a problem............just glad I remembered something useful for a change lol.

Sorry to learn you missed out..............like you said they don't work together and will not mention anything, so thank goodness for websites too lol.

I hope they backdated the Carers all the way for you........sometimes to what I am aware of they will do this within a good reason and do think yours was good enough for them to do this for you.

All the best hun.
