di30 Report post Posted October 17, 2007 Hi All. Just got in touch with MENCAP, and have a visit next week, this is regarding my son Daniel, with education issues and regarding help and advice about complaints to the DLA tribunals etc. This is the first time I have dealt with MENCAP, but was advised by YourAble about these, and was informed they help with different issues. Please could anyone tell me if they have used MENCAP for anything and what you think ? Thank you so much. Di xx

JsMum Report post Posted October 17, 2007 They are brilliant and very supportive, the person helping me is great and has phoned me regular to keep up to date, as yet I have not actually recieved a letter telling me that the CDT can not support J because of his IQ. Once I do I am recieving support with letters and editing by this organisation, they know a lot about other services too, they have already directed me to the Disability Law Services. di30 Report post Posted October 17, 2007 Just for curiosity.............would it matter if we also have a support worker from social services if we have now got help from mencap ? Daniel was referred to the support worker a few weeks ago when I contacted them, this was also to do with education and social issues, like finding outside clubs etc, so just want to be sure this was okay to have both, as all this is new to me, cheers. Di xx Hiya Di, I think any extra help you can get would certainly be of benefit, the more support you can get the better! We had a family link worker who Hayden's social worker put us in touch with, she only did two days work of with Hayden & thought that she couldn't help any more as he would need greater help than she could offer still it was worth a try i guess..... Hayden's paed has also referred his to their specialist Health Visitor who would like to offer support and behaviour management for Hayden. I had a right nightmare in the summer holidays trying to find clubs for him to go to, he gets the childrens fund vouchers scheme every holiday & it lists places where he can go, one of the places i sent him in their directory was our local leisure centre 'The holiday club' well.....they grappled him to the floor!!! saying they couldn't control him & how they didn't have the trained staff to look after him I was not a happy i complained to our social worker. I'd say go for any help you can get Di, the more the better - good luck! xxxx Edited October 18, 2007 by Caroline-
di30 Report post Posted October 19, 2007 Hi Caroline Thank you hun . The support worker that Daniel has he is a lovely young guy and a Student support key worker, so really he is still learning and must give him that chance, but like you said the more help & support the better , so next Monday the lady from Mencap will be visiting I will see what help can be offered altogether. Worth trying it out I think. , and see what happens from there. Hope all works out for you too hun. All the very best to you and speak to you shortly. di30 Report post Posted October 22, 2007 Hi all. Just an update as promised regarding the MENCAP visit this morning. Wow, she was great and would recommend them to everyone who needs support in various issues. The lady gave me lots of information sheets and even contacts I didn't know existed, such as 'The friendly trust' etc, these help with DLA appeals anc covers a range of areas around Wales, they are basied in Cardiff but also cover my region, will check online where else too for your information in case ever needed. She is also going to get in touch with Daniel's keyworker from the 'disabilities team' and write a letter to the Education dept, the school's senco etc for extra support which we have been fighting for. Information sheets were given on Transition for for when he starts year 9 etc. The lists goes on and on, from Debt & welfare benefits, housing, employment, mental health and education. Any letters you want done for support they will do this, so this is now less of a burden to me now. Well worth the visit, very helpful indeed, so glad I came across them.
