big toe damage

Recommended Posts

I feel so awful.

My youngest ds ('Ben') was playing with his friend on Sunday evening and he staggered into the kitchen saying that he'd banged his toe and it hurt so bad that he must've broken it. Me being the sensitive soul I am said 'oh don't be daft, you've stubbed your toe it'll be ok'. It was bleeding a bit so I gave it a wash and stuck a plaster on it. Monday morning he woke up and the toe was so swollen and bruised he couldn't get his shoe on, so he stayed off school. Tuesday it was no better and he had yet another day off! Going with the 'bruised' theory I went and bought a cushioned toe thing and a little bandage so that he could at least try and go to school on Wednesday. Wednesday morning it was still looking really swollen and I was starting to go with the theory that it may be broken. Anyway, being the kind person I am I still made him go to school and said we'll see how it is tomorrow. Tomorrow came (thursday) and even though it was still bruised and swollen he managed to get his shoe on so I assumed it must be getting better. Last night though he was in quite a bit of pain, and this morning when he tried to put his shoe on he started to cry (he NEVER cries when he hurts himself) and I realised that it was obviously a bit more serious than I'd thought.

So this morning I took him to the minor injuries department, the nurse took one look at it and said 'broken toe'. Then he had an X Ray and the nurse came and told me it wasn't broken, 'oh good' I said.... but there was more. The bone isn't broken, but the front of his toe has moved away from the main joint (he showed me the Xray and there's about half an inch gap where there should only be a couple of millimetres!). Also he pointed out that it had 'dropped' and he had very little movement in it... which means that he has probably damaged the ligament which in his words 'is far worse than breaking a bone'.... I've got to take him to the main hospital tomorrow morning to see a specialist in the trauma unit. He's in agony, and now that I'm looking at it with less skeptism it looks dreadful. His poor toe looks really deformed. I feel so guilty! The nurse reassured me and said I'd done the right thing because the amount of people that come there with absolutely nothing wrong with them and have wasted everyone's time by not 'waiting and seeing'. Still feel awful though

Flora, you did what you thought was best at the time >:D<<'>

When our youngest DD broke her leg falling in the garden, I kept trying to stand her up, thinking you couldn't possibly break a leg falling in a garden, and she'd just jarred it badly and needed to stretch it :o:shame:

And when our DS broke his shoulder, I told him to get a grip, it was just a bad sprain and he should of been more careful on his bike

Both incidents happened within 3 weeks of each other....so my shame was deep :shame:

Just got back from the hospital. A consultant looked at his Xrays and he has broken the bone (it's a tiny fracture that the nurse had missed) and has torn the ligament which works the big toe. He's got a plaster cast, special shoe and crutches for 6 weeks!

Bagpuss >:D<<'> I've got a theory about it. We are so used to people thinking we are neurotic mothers that we are so determined not to be you can't win!

Tut! Easy done...

I remember the time Ben fell of a swing and hurt his arm... took me three days to realise it was actually missing

Well it was his left one...

Luckily when we went back to the park it was still there (a bit dog chewed, but pretty much complete) and it grafted back on nicely, and we all had a good laugh about it in the end!:lol:

Ho hum :)

Seriously, hen - hope the wee fella's better soon! >:D<<'>

Ouch - >:D<<'> Poor toe!

Did have a giggle though!:shame: I'm more of the mad crazy panic variety.

This is after monkey running about like a teeny duracell bunny, bouncing about all over the place, not a care in the world at 18 months - and THEN finding out he had broken his ankle....................

 Some of these posts remind me of that French and Saunders sketch years ago, with the two fat ladies who lived on a farm; in one sketch one of them accidently shot the other one's arm off with an air rifle and then asked her if she was ok to which she said 'oh don't worry about it, it's just a little scratch', while blood was pumping out of her severed stump

Flo' :D
