Tally Report post Posted July 27, 2008 Someone just showed me this link about a woman with AS who works for the Police and I thought you would find it interesting! http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Autistic-spec...%20stories.aspx
warrenpenalver Report post Posted July 27, 2008 Interesting how she was diagnosed with AS by her GP.
Tally Report post Posted July 27, 2008 I expect it was a much longer process than she describes in the article.
Mumble Report post Posted July 27, 2008 I agree with the last two sentences. You can't by dx'ed by your GP though, so there's something a bit iffy there. Either she doesn't have a formal dx or she does and is hiding something from her employees.
Tally Report post Posted July 27, 2008 I think the issue of the difficulty of obtaining adult diagnosis has been glossed over because 1, this article was published by the NHS, who do not want to make a big deal about that and 2, the article is about how she copes with AS in her job, rather than the difficulties she faced seeking diagnosis. Maybe her GP's say-so is enough for her to get the support she needs in her job. Or maybe her GP agreed with her self-diagnosis and she does not realise this is not an official diagnosis. But it's likely the NHS would have checked her diagnosis was official before publishing this article about her.
TheNeil Report post Posted July 27, 2008 Maybe her GP just agreed that she was right to think that she was AS...and then sent her off to whoever and wherever.
alanm Report post Posted July 28, 2008 A nice positive story to read, as she says at the end it is important that the police know how to communicate with people with autism effectively, and an employee of their own with Asperger is one of the best forms of first hand experience.
