AS and Working for the Police

Recommended Posts

I agree with the last two sentences.

You can't by dx'ed by your GP though, so there's something a bit iffy there. Either she doesn't have a formal dx or she does and is hiding something from her employees.

I think the issue of the difficulty of obtaining adult diagnosis has been glossed over because 1, this article was published by the NHS, who do not want to make a big deal about that and 2, the article is about how she copes with AS in her job, rather than the difficulties she faced seeking diagnosis.

Maybe her GP's say-so is enough for her to get the support she needs in her job. Or maybe her GP agreed with her self-diagnosis and she does not realise this is not an official diagnosis. But it's likely the NHS would have checked her diagnosis was official before publishing this article about her.

Maybe her GP just agreed that she was right to think that she was AS...and then sent her off to whoever and wherever.

A nice positive story to read, as she says at the end it is important that the police know how to communicate with people with autism effectively, and an employee of their own with Asperger is one of the best forms of first hand experience.
