Sharing information about siblings with another SLT

Recommended Posts

My older dd is in the process of being referred to a specialist SLT for speech and language diffculties and Ed psy.

Now my younger dd goes to a different school and has been under a slt team for 3yrs and on School action pLUS she is now 5yrs old.

Would it be of interest to this slt to share information on the types of speech and language diffculties her older sister has,

pragmatic, segmantic, grammer delay etc...

The reason is that both my dd diffculties (weakness) are excatly the same, but i'm finding the SLT is using stragies for delay rather than language/communication disorder and she says she isn't concerned the same response i had when her older sister was that age and now she is 8 yrs old my dd pead is becoming concerned and so are her school.

MY 5 yr old is due a SLT review next week in school so i'm wondering if i should send a letter listing of all problems her sister has and she can look into it.

Hi Katie can't help you much but just saw your post so had to reply i am glad they are starting to listen to you more it as taken them long enough, but you need to insist that you know your daughters and tell them that they were wrong about your eldest and now they are doing something but you don't want your younger daughter suffer the same fate so to speak and wait until she is mega behind say you want it dealing with now and say you will be rather annoyed if you have to do it all again later when they could help her now, i know i can't speak as the professionals don't listen to me either, but i am so fed up with fighting at the minuite i am taking time out and building up my energy and by the time they say they will see her again in a years time by then she will have sat results and i know her behaviour won't have altered as she is just like her older sister who is still immature for her age and not much eye contact etc at 13yrs old so and Melissa is about 2 and half years behind Lisa in everything she did, ie stripping off clothes she is just starting to do that now Lisa had grown out of it at five and started at 3 the dog stage Lisa started at a younger age whereas Melissa as just started and the licking she is similar but more delayed if you know what i mean. Lisa was extremely forward and bright for her age she is in the top groups in high school, they think she will get 5 or more a* - c in her exams they think she will make a good university student, everyone calls her swat, she is very eccentric not trendy just follows her own style what is comfortable and not got lables in cuts them out herself now, then Melissa is the opposite struggling in school but i do think she is bright but she can't read or write or not write her own sentences. She is progressing but not as her peers are i don't know what level she is at but i would hazard a guess at W which is working towards level 1 i am due to see teacher in 2wks today i am now going to think of questions to ask her, i don't know if you can help me out as your daughter is older i have never had to go through this before, my older 2 were ok. Sorry rambling again you know me, i don't know where Melissa gets her talking from i am like this in real life, i don't take a breath either, lol  Hope you are keeping well. Sharonx

Hi hun,

In Erin school she had term targets for literacy and numeracy during yr 1 and 2, i found she was always on the bottom target (which is fine for some) but for Erin she hadn't even learn't them and then the following term she was set another, that's how i knew she was behind.

I can remember saying to the pead about this and i also put it in our parent Statuatory Assessment.

I also remember she was the only child who didn't have key word list, when i questioned the senco she said it was because she didn't need them - now i know its because she couldn't learn them.

GOSH I'M TYRING TO REMEMBER WHAT I USED TO MOAN ABOUT !!

Ah yea also

I kept all her writing and pictures i couldn't see any changes (improvement) i have used this for evidence with pead and statuatary asssessment e.g she has spelt mumy, bay (day) for 3 yrs now surley if all was fine she would of learn't this by now.

I kept on saying that if her speech and language was delayed (2yrs) in reception yr how would this benefit her reading skills

well you know how far behind she is now.

To be honest i can't give any advice, schools will do what they want to do, it wasn't untill Erin was in yr 2 and her sats results were level 1 in all subjects that i had some proof, and even then the school said she doesn't have real SEN as she would be on level w, just a load of rubbish they give.
