dana Report post Posted April 13, 2009 (edited) Hello there, I spoke with our GP about my sons problems at school and she asked me to tell the school to send her a letter with their concerns about my ds so she will reffer him to the pediatrician together with it. I spoke with SENCO and she promissed she would do it(write the letter) after the Easter holidays. In May my ds will (hopefully ) be seen by EP at school. I asked SENCO if that(seeing a pediatrician and EP) will help him to get statmented but she was very pesimistic and told me that she tried to statement 5 children who are much more severe than my ds but got it only for 2 of them! Anyway ,we ll see what will EP say. He will come to school, observe my son, read the reports of his teacher and SENCO,asses him and talk to me about his development. This will all happen the whole morning before lunch. Then he will write the report. Wish us luck with all this ,please. I am still not 100% sure about dx my ds and I am dreading it but I have started the process and I hope it will help him. (acctually the school also suggested it, they said he is phisically all over the place). I wander if anybody here is from cambridgeshire and has experiance with specialists there since we live in cambs. and would like to know what to expect. (well,at least a litte bit). danaxxx Edited April 13, 2009 by dana

Mum of 3 Report post Posted April 13, 2009 Hi Dana, I'm with you all the way <'> We've just begun the process with G, our 5Yr old DS. The EPs spoke to us and observed him at school and have referred him for a multi-agency assessment. At the same time, we're seeing a paediatritian. We first saw one last August, but he's now retired so we're seeing a new one on Thursday. Going to post on here for advice about what to say! One thing I keep reminding myself is that I'm in this to get help for G. I, too, keep wavering about whether or not G should have an asd dx. I've read every book I can get my hands on, and to be honest, I've become a little obsessed about it (and I scored nowhere on the online asd tests!!!). My mum and DH keep telling me to stop worrying-it's not for me to dx him; all we're doing is asking for someone to give us reasons for some of his behaviours and some help with dealing with it. On the issue of statementing, no matter how 'severe' other children are, if they all need support, they should all be getting it. The school need to be a bit more creative about how they provide the support, or how they request it, maybe! A statement may not be necessary. Alot can be done for a child at School Action +, or even at School Action, if they have good systems in place. And remember, the Govt is commited to their 'Every Child Matters' agenda, so use that to remind the school of their responsibilities if necessary. The way I see it, I don't want to be a squeeky wheel, but if that's what gets the grease, then... Let's Squeek!

wasuup Report post Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) Hi Dana It varies from area to area from what I gather on who does the diagnosing and how. In my area my son has had his eyesight, hearing, speech and language, visual motor skills all assesed by the relevant professional and we have seen the paediatrician a few times, he has also visited school and we are waiting on an EP report. All the reports then goto a meeting panal were various professionals look at the reports and decide whether or not to diagnose snd what to diagnose if anything. I first raised concerns with my health visitor about a year ago. So it can sometimes take a while. I expect that as the panal doesn't meet all that often that I will still have a little longer to wait. Edited April 15, 2009 by wasuup
