School Autism Team

Recommended Posts

My daughter has recently been given a diagnosis of Tourettes Syndrome with the aggression/temper problems that she has being put down to the disinhibition that can accompany it, plus "mild symptoms of an autistic spectrum disorder" in the areas of social interaction, social expressiveness and social communication skills. Is there any likelihood that the LEA's Autism Team would become involved with this level of diagnosis or are they only involved with more severe cases?

If you have any kind of autism diagnosis it is worth asking for all the specialist support that you can. LEA's are very fond of labels like mild as they translate it into 'does not need additional support'

The bottom line is your daughter needs support and is entitled to receive it.

If your daughter has a statement, try to get this support written in when it comes up for review.

I have just been through this - our LEA told the school that only children with statements could have Autism Outreach - then I rang the Ed Officer in charge of AO, and he said if the school sent in evidence of his "severe communciation difficulties" he might be able to have it - the school did this, but was told he could have AO before it got there (I think my reputation helped!). My son has a dx of "aspects of Aspergers".
