2 refusals to assess for statement

Recommended Posts

It depends who assessed and what the purpose of that assessment was.

For example my son was assessed by the EP and SALT (on the education side, as he was in school). And they produced further reports when he was being assessed for a Statement.

He was also assessed by the Developmental Paediatrician, the Clinical Psychologist purely for a diagnosis, and they did not look into how the dx affected him personally or give any advice. They just gave a dx and a leaflet about the Parent Partnership.

SALT, OT and Physio (if needed) ARE all educational needs, incase you are told otherwise.

It is important to read the CoP because, as you have already found, those in the system either deliberately give false information to parents, or they don't know the system themselves. So you will end up like a PA/Case worker for your own child, but it is essential to ensure that everything is done as it should be.

You will also be asked for your views. There is a very long form that you fill in to give all the background information and also a current picture of how your child is and what you feel their diffiuclties are.

Hi there Sally, Liam was assessed at the child development centre to establish a diagnosis which was given as Liam being a child with ASD, Liam was assessed for 3 weeks in a specialised nursery by the following people, Speech and Language therapist, Occupational therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist, educational psychologist, health vistitor, community paediatrician, nursery nurse. The staff at the cdc have been brilliant and have offered lots of support and we are to have further appointments with the paediatrician and we also have regular visits and conatct with the specialist health visitor for children with special needs.

Hi.It is worth making sure that all of the people you have detailed are asked by the LA to submit reports towards Statutary Assessment. You could write a brief note requesting this.

The professionals will then decide whether they have enough information already or whether they need to do more assessments.I think it unlikely that many more assessments willl be needed because the cdc assessments appear to have taken a long time and involved most professionals already so are probably fairly detailed. Also they are very up to date. The LA [children's services] Social Services will also be contacted however they usually only write a report if the family are known to them if not they just confirm that they have no information.

This might be useful. It includes some ideas regarding information to include in your report for the LA.

This might also be helpful.

As Karen has said you could write asking for those involved to produce reports.

There are many, many assessments that professionals can carry out depending on what skill they are assessing. And different assessments would be carried out when the aim is to get a diagnosis, as opposed to looking at the child and trying to tease out exactly how that dx affects them.

I also remember reading somewhere that younger children with Statements should be reviewed more frequently than once a year??? As your child is developing it will become more obvious where difficulties are. And the most apparent difficulty, or the one that causes the child the most difficulty can and does change over time.

For example at his age assessing his working memory may not be possible. But that may be a major issue for him in a couple of years time, and would then be something that could and should be assessed.

As he has a diagnosis of an ASD you also want to ensure that not only speech and communication needs are itemised in the Proposed Statement, but also social interaction and play skills as those difficulties are part of the dx and programmes of therapy and professional input and staffing hours to carry out these programmes needs to be incorporated into the Statement.
