No to funding

Hi just thought I would let you know funding has been turned down at the meeting yesterday for Glen's 12 week mental health assessment, so no Youngfoundations for Glen. In fact I have heard that the place in Scotland has now gone but there is another place come up in the Midlands, but as I say judging by what social services has just told me its very unlikely that Glen will go.

 

Social services are now going to do a Core assessment, I'm not quite sure all of what that entails.

 

As you can imagine I am very disappointed in this result especially after being told it was almost a certainty that Glen would get the funding.

That is really awful It has taken all this time and thought it would have been worth it,what are you meant to do now?

How dissapointing for you Jeanne . They just dont want to pay . I have found , in my experience , drugs are given out to control behaviour , with no supporting therapy or trying to get to the bottom of the problems . Drugs and respite is whats offered . Can you appeal ?

Well what they are saying is they will fund the right place. They feel that the youngfoundations does not have enough mental health input so at least they have said they will fund but it has to be suitable for Glen. Apparently Maudlsey Hospital is an alternative, so time will tell.

Hi Jeanne ,Maudsley Hospital is down the road from me . Mother-in-law is in there at the moment . It is not the most nice/pleasant place in the world. Hope they sort something out for you soon, x

Even if they sort something out for Maudsley hospital it won't be residential I doubt. Glen not only needs a mental health assessment he needed what Youngfoundations could offer as far as in-dependency was concerned which would have helped Glen for the future. I really worry now what will happen to Glen especially as I'm getting older, 50 next year I struggle now when Glen has his bad times and it all falls on me as I'm his main carer, it is a big concern.

Jeanne, it may be at the Michael Rutter Centre at Maudsley which apparently specialises in autism . My son had an assesment by them. Will pm you the name of the psychologist there so you know what to expect, she is extremely insensitive, unsupportive and has very fixed ideas about lads like ours. I often left meetings in tears and i am a very strong person. She was still there 3 years ago, lets hope shes left. When my son went over to the adult team , it was like a huge weight had been lifted and they are entirely different and respectful. I have the same worries and concerns as you and dont have any solutions at the moment. It really is not easy, x

Hi just an update I have found out through the temporary manager at social services (she was at this panel meeting) that the in-patient option was being discussed as apposed to the outpatient one. I won't know anymore now until next week week I can speak to the psychiatrist. I will let you know further next week.

I suppose it will depend where the in- patient placement will be ? It would have to be in reasonably pleasant surroundings

( especially for a youngster) if it is going to be for a longish period of time. Many of these places people are trying to escape from , i know MIL was yesterday

Hi Lisa, you are right about places such as Maudsley thats why Glen would have been better off with young foundations. However I will say no if I think it is not appropriate for Glen the final decision will be with me after all, thats why I said no to the first choice they came up with in Northampton, St. Andrews Centre I think it was called, but that turned out not to be suitable for Glen in the end anyway.

Hi Jeanne, yes you are very right, they cant make you send him anywhere you are not comfortable with, how frustrating that it is taking so long for them to get their act together,x

Yes it is very frustrating indeed particularly how urgent this has been. Thankfully though since being on prozac Glen was calmed down a lot and is much happier in himself although still is anxious regarding going to places. I have to try and get him to respite this Friday he is there for 3 nights. The respite home have said if I can't get him there then they will come out and get him which is nice of them, they had to come and get him a few weeks back because he wouldn't go for me, he became very aggressive so at least I know they will come if necessary.
