reassessment of SEN Does the Child have to be in school

Recommended Posts

I have removed my son from his presant school due to the school not meeting my sons statemented needs and the scholl can no longer meet his needs as he requires holiday respite, also as the schools behaviour management is a great concern.

The LEA have agreed to reassess his SENs, can the reassessment still go ahead with J at home. I am worried the LEA will insist I return J to school for the reassessment, we have found another school that could meet all his needs especially his social and communication needs/respite. So we do hope to get J back into education as soon as possible, but could the LEA force J to return back into his present school that has totally broken down.

Not sure if it's the same thing, but my son was out of school throughout the Statementing process. The LA EP assessed him at home.

Hope you find a positive way forward.

I remember when J was been assessed by the LEA EP when we where fighting to get him into this special school, the assessment was done at home as he was part time table and refusing to attend school, so she came to our home.

I am just worried the LEA will insist he returns to school just so they can reassess him, but yes I do remember that last assessments where done at home so I will put that to them.

Thanks Bid.

We're currently trying to get ds back to school after three years home education. We've just applied for a statutory assessment (ds doesn't have a statement.) The inclusion service said that ideally he should be assessed in an educational setting, and suggested the tuition centre for children out of school for medical reasons. But the centre is almost full with Y10 & Y11 kids and ds is only 12. So he has a home tutor 2 hours a week now, to do a teacher assessment. The EP will assess at home.

We've had some detailed conversations about precisely what they are assessing. Academic ability could be assessed more or less anywhere if the child is comfortable, but ability to cope with a school environment would be quite difficult at home. The tutor says she's assessing his ability to work with another adult.

As Coolblue says, certain things, like interaction with the school environment, couldn't be assessed properly at home, but there's no legal requirement for a child to be in school for a Statutory Assessment/reassessment to take place.

My daughter also had a full Statutory assessment while she was out of school.

Hi thanks cb, J is already in specialist education, there is already evidence to prove J needs a spcial school, we have nominated another special school already, as we know he needs this provision, I just didnt want to have to fight J back into the school when Ive removed him because of a Number of concerns and it not meeting his needs just because of this reassessment!

We will be looking at some more independant assessment too and these where done at home also and at a Clinic in the past.

I just cant believe that Im in this situation 2yrs down the road!

I agree with what Kathryn is saying. The EP can carry out educational assessments. But I would ask them about the 'educational environment' they are assessing in, and ask them to specify that in their report. Because they will be assessing him in a quiet, familiar, low arousal 1:1 discreet session. If she finds he performs 'well' in that environment, then that is the environment she needs to describe in her report.

Although my son is in school I have always asked professionals about the 'environment' they are assessing in. All their reports do state the environment he was assessed in and that in other environments his performance diminishes due to sensory processing and cognitive load.

I presume you already have written evidence (letters, reports, exclusions, GP notes etc) that he does not cope in typical school environments?
