zeldasmum Report post Posted March 27, 2011 Please could somebody point me in the right direction of a study that supports the use of metoclopramide during pregnancy. I know that it would change things but it would could put my mind at rest. The only studies that i can find are that metoclopramide doesn't cause birth defects which Autism isn't. Metoclopramide crosses the placenta and the blood brain barrier. I am not trying to start a big debate like the MMR but purely for my own peace of mind. bid Report post Posted March 27, 2011 I had a very quick google for contra-indications, and pregnancy wasn't listed. HTH Bid
zeldasmum Report post Posted March 27, 2011 Thank you for taking the time, I have googled for hours. Although it states that metoclopramide is safe during pregnancy this is an off the label usage. I cannot find a single study to confirm this other than it doesn' cause a significant increase in Birth defects. I am looking for information on the developing child. Lots of parents have sued the maker of this drug as it was given to children for reflux and has caused Tardive dyskinesia (parkinson's like symptoms) and it now has a black box warning on it. If I could just find a decent study that confirms that there was no ill effect on the developing child I could stop obssessing about it.
bid Report post Posted March 27, 2011 Sory Zelda, I think I misunderstood your post...I thought you were worried because you had taken this while you were pregnant. Hope you do find some information to put your mind at rest Bid
zeldasmum Report post Posted March 27, 2011 Hya Bid, sorry I am not being very clear. I did take this whilst pregnant for severe morning sickness and thought no more about it. One of the questionnaires I completed about DS asked about meds I had taken during pregnancy. I was reading the debate about MMR on here and one of the posters talked about a predisposition exacerbated by enviromental factors and meds taken in pregnancy. This made me wonder so I googled the drug and was dismayed by what I found. In addition to the proven complications (tardive) there are lots of parents who have posted on different sites saying that they took this drug and have a child dx with ASD or PDD. I know it is only anecdotal but until I can find some evidence to disprove this I can't stop obsessing.
