very interesting

Recommended Posts

today i did one of those psychology test thingys to find out what kind of career im best suited too, here are the results:

apparently im extremally interested in: caring, i.e using social skills to teach, support, care for, and help others. the jobs that came up were,

alternaitve therapies,

education and training,

medicene

and social services.

apparantley im moderatley interested in: authority i.e, working in difficult situations or tough environments, giving clear orders and following demands, the jobs that came up were,

security and uniformed services.

apparantley im a little bit interested in: influencing, i.e working with pepole and helping to influence there views and chioces, the jobs that came up were,

marketing, selling and avertising, retail sales and customer service.

apparantley im not at all interested in:

scientific, leisure, organising, reading or writting, engineering, storage or transpot, numerically focused.

apparantley im very motivated in a creative enviroment, and not at all motivated in a pepole focused environment.

just found all this very interesting, so any thoughts about what career i should go for?

How can it suggest education and training for example and then say that you are not motivated to be in a people focused environment?

I think a lot of these things are starting points to make us think. One thing I hate about our education system is that it is way too focused on promoting a narrow focus in respect to skills and as a result people often have a similar narrow minded viewpoint of work. As a result we tend to think in terms of jobs and not skills.

If I was you as I would write down all the things you are really good at in lfe and see if a picture emerges, or ask close friends what they think your skills are.

I did this and the same answer came out 'porn star'. You might find a similar thing happens and if it does the test might be a good starting point but nothing more than that.

just a few thoughts.

well, im very intereted in being a young persons mentor, for troubled kids, maybe even working in a foster home. im a very 'tomorrow' minded person and want to see pepole reach there potential. on the other hand i wouldnt mind owning my own texas style steak house either.

maybe id be more efficent in 1:1 situations or small groups.

Sounds like its leading to a plan to me the working with young kids stuff.

I personally found owning a bike shop hard work because there was so much stuff in there I wanted to try out for myself but couldn't, suspect a steak house might be the same, good for a bit untill you look at the balance sheet at the end of the month.

I go back to the motivation post, make some contacts and arrange to shadow someone for a day or two and get a feel for what might be involved. I was at college with someone who lived in my appartment doing a postgraduate diploma in social care, half of the time he couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to go to placements. Personally I wouldn't let him spend 5 minutes with my son, you on the other had could have him for the day no problems as far as I am concerned.

A few years back I was doing a big project in South Cumbria in a rural community and was trying to get a feel for the area I was working in so would go up to the place and simply hang around and talk to people. I was asking them for one sentence to sum up the place and an old guy turned to me, a farmer, thought and said the following, it just came to my mind thinking about this post;

"different strokes for different folks"

For me these are very few words but very profound, guess its all about finding something which feels right for you, other peoples values do not matter that much its more about finding as good fit and I think a lot of that is all about the emotional level.

He goes to the gym all the time and he has yet to hook up with a 40 something female, so he obviously isn't qualified for that position.

I see "gym instructor" is not on the list...

i belive true love for the gym cant be taught, plus only you know what exersises are going to work for your particular body, id have no right telling anybody how to train. and not only that bodybuilding and all round fittness is my hobby, and something i do to relax (torcher) myself. (relaxation and torcher is same thing in my book)

I did one of those career test things a couple of times, I should be in the army, a police officer, an accountant or an undertaker - cuz they are like soooooo similar!!!

I got the same results at school at age 15ish and again around my mid 20's so I guess it's consistent - or I am... maybe I should try again now I'm in my 30's

When we were 15 at school we had to go and have a 10 minute interivew with the careers officer, no computers in those days just a human being. One after another we left the normal lesson to return a bit later and a theme was starting to emerge, join the army. It didn't matter if you were tall or short, fat or thin, the answer was join the army.

One of my mates Phil was in before me so I was standing outside the door of an office, which was in fact a converted staff toilet and he came out and said you can go in. I asked what they had said expecting join the army to come back and he said, to be a hairdresser. I looked at him and said 'you what!'

Phil followed the advice and set up a salon in our home town and then expanded into Liverpool and then Manchester. He had a good reputation through winning competitions and now runs a hairdresser trainning centre as well, he is worth a few quid to be honest, rags to riches stuff. As for me my interview only lasted 3 or 4 minutes because I wanted to know what the prerequisite skills were for being shot at, and was told that I was not taking it seriously and got kicked out. I never did find out it could have been brain surgeon, prime minister or even porn star, I had a nagging feeling it was going to be the army somehow.

Great story

I did another test today and apparently I should be some kind of artist/musician/photographer/designer, who dabbles with clinical psychology and teaching and is a minister of religion on the side, while also messing around with accountancy or banking - yay - that should keep me busy!!!

I logged in and registered and have done the skills bit so far. It came back and highlighted creativity and innovation as strengths and to look at things such as environmental sciences which is very close to what I do. I didn't put any other optional stuff in to give it a clue.

My gut reaction was the qualification level bit, I did wonder what would have been the results if I put in a lower level. I used level 7 but if I for example went back to say level 3 as I would have been at an earlier point in my life will it point me in the same direction, might re register and give it another run through to see.
